Hawks Surge Late, Fall To Emmanuel

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team had the clock run out on their attempted comeback against Emmanuel in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Destiny Robinson posted her third double-double in the last four games with 14 points and 13 rebounds.  Mariah Coker led the team with 15 points.

Keibra Hopkins and Monique Jones chipped in with seven points each.

Chowan went 11-18 from the free throw line including 1-6 in the first half.  The Hawks went 10-12 in the fourth quarter.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Keibra Hopkins and Destiny Robinson scored the opening four points for the Hawks.  A three point play by Aniah Patterson put the Hawks up 7-2.  The Lions connected on back-to-back triples before Robinson handed the lead back to the Hawks 9-8.

Monique Jones connected from the floor and Mariah Coker hit a three pointer to lead 14-10.  Emmanuel went on a 6-0 run to end the quarter to lead 16-14.

Second Quarter:

Mariah Coker connected from behind the arc to keep the Hawks close, 19-17, but the Lions pushed their lead to 24-17.  Demetria Bland sparked a 9-2 run to even the score at 26-all with 3:04 remaining in the half.

Destiny Robinson and Monique Jones converted from the floor and Mariah Coker connected from deep to even the score.  Emmanuel ended the run with a triple.  Demetria Bland hit a layup and Olivia Gaither hit a jumper to take the lead 30-29.

Emmanuel hit a three pointer to lead 32-30 at the intermission.

Third Quarter:

Destiny Robinson and Keibra Hopkins regained the lead for the Hawks, 34-32, before the Lions went on a 12-3 run to lead 44-37.  Olivia Gaither knocked down a triple during the offensive stall.

Mariah Coker ended the run with a jumper but the Lions answered at the other end.  Teylahna Green connected from deep to trim the deficit to 46-42.

Emmanuel quickly moved the score to double-digits, 54-42, before Keibra Hopkins knocked down a three pointer at the end of the quarter.

Fourth Quarter:

Kaylah Henderson scored the first four points for the Hawks in the period.  Emaree Hinton added a layup and Monique Jones went 1-2 from the line to cut the deficit to 58-52.

Monique Jones added a pair from the stripe along with baskets by Kaylah Henderson and Destiny Robinson to keep the Hawks close, 64-58.

Emaree Hinton went 1-2 from the stripe and Destiny Robinson hit a layup on transition to close the gap to 64-61 with 3:32 to play.  Emmanuel knocked down a triple to keep the Hawks at-bay.  Mariah Coker connected from the stripe before the Lions went on a small 5-0 run.

Mariah Coker added another set from the line and Destiny Robinson converted the layup to trim the deficit to 72-67 with 1:22 remaining.

Emmanuel finished off the contest with the final two baskets for the 76-67 victory.
