Hawks Softball Falls To Mercy And Mars Hill

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Chowan Softball team dropped a pair of non-conference tilts on the final day of the Patriot Invitational hosted by Francis Marion on Sunday.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Chowan picked up seven hits and one run in the doubleheader.  Paige Wilhelm led the team with two hits.  Hannah Naifeh, Delaney Devor, Lindsey Stigler, Mikayla Luskin, and Jesse Gentry picked up one hit each.

Meredith Morgan registered the lone RBI on the day.  Paige Wilhelm extended her hitting streak to five games.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Chowan 1, Mercy 7

Paige Wilhelm started the contest with an infield single.  Delaney Devor drew a walk before the two moved up a base on a wild pitch.  Lindsey Stigler drew a walk to load the bases before a fielder's choice plated the opening run of the game.

Mercy evened the game in the bottom of the second inning on two free passes and a base hit.  Delaney Devor throw the second runner trying to score out at the plate to end the inning.

The Mavericks scored four runs off three hits and an error to lead 5-1.

In the fourth inning, Haleigh Reid was robbed up a hit as a strong through deep in the hole by the shortstop.  Jesse Gentry picked up a single up the middle but was left stranded.

Hannah Naifeh posted a pinch hit single.  Mikayla Luskin re-entered and swiped second before moving to third on a wild pitch.  Delaney Devor drew a walk and swiped second.  Devor would be caught in a run-down but the runner would be unable to advance and score.

Mercy tacked on two more runs in the fifth to lead 7-1.  Lindsey Stigler was the final base runner for the Hawks in the sixth inning before being erased on a double-play.

Game Two: Chowan 0, Mars Hill 9

Mars Hill took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on three hits.

Chowan looked to do damage in the bottom of the inning as Paige Wilhelm started off the inning with a single.  Delaney Devor reached on a bunt single and Lindsey Stigler loaded the bases with a single to left.  The next three batters for the Hawks struck out after the mound visit.

Mars Hill added two more runs in the second on four hits but a bases-loaded ground out ended the inning, 3-0.

Mikayla Luskin reached on a bunt single in the bottom of the second.  Mackenzie Taggart moved Luskin to second on a sacrifice bunt but would be left stranded.

In the bottom of the third, Lindsey Stigler would be robbed of an extra base hit as the left fielder made a sliding catch for the second out.

Brooklynne Johnson was hit by a pitch in the fourth but was unable to muster a rally.  Mars Hill pushed across a run in the fifth inning on one hit and an error to lead 4-0.

Paige Wilhelm was hit by a pitch in the fifth and swiped second but was left stranded in scoring position.

The Lions scored five runs off seven hits and an error in the sixth inning to lead 9-0.  The Hawks were unable to get anyone past first base as Brooklynne Johnson was the lone base runner in the sixth.

Chowan hosts Anderson and Holy Family in non-conference doubleheaders on February 22-23.
