MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Baseball teams split the final two games of the series to split the series with Kutztown on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.

Travis Cross led the Hawks at the plate going 5-6 on the day with three doubles, a home run, and three RBI. Tyler Jones and Jack Kane picked up two hits each. Kane recorded two doubles, while Jones added two walks.
Noah Evington picked up a two-RBI double. Joe Nelms recorded a triple.
Caleb Peterson (2-0) picked up the win in the nightcap in his first start of the season tossing 5.0 innings allowing two runs off seven hits. Jarret Henderson picked up his second save of the season in relief.
Game two of the day was shortened because of darkness.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One: Chowan 5, Kutztown 7
Kutztown jumped on the board early in the contest with a four run outburst in the top of the first inning on three hits and two walks.
Travis Cross doubled in the bottom of the first inning but was left stranded. Kutztown added a run in the second inning to lead 5-0.
Chowan was able to close the gap to 5-1 in the bottom of the second inning as Patrick Krack led off the inning with a single to left center. Krack would swipe second before moving to third on a fly out by Brock Cross. Krack would score on a fielding error.
Kutztown added the run back in the third inning to lead 6-1. Tyler Jones started the bottom the inning with a single to right field. The attempted throw at first base sailed and caught Jones heading for second on the perfect carom to the pitcher. Travis Cross doubled to deep center before Dallas Trevena drew a walk. Cross and Trevena moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch but would be left stranded in scoring position.
The Golden Bears pushed their lead to 7-1 in the top of the sixth inning. The Hawks limited the damage nabbing the runner heading back to third for the second out.
Chowan rallied in the bottom of the seventh as Noah Cartwright started off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield. Joe Nelms tripled to deep center to score Cartwright. Tyler Jones reached on an infield single to plate Nelms. Travis Cross would go deep to right to cut the deficit to 7-5. Dallas Trevena singled and Jack Kane double to put the tying runs in scoring position. A deep fly out by Patrick Krack ended the rally.
Game Two: Chowan 5, Kutztown 2
Kutztown broke the scoreless draw in the top of the third with two runs on two hits and a walk.
The Hawks would get on the board in the bottom of the inning as Brendon Grant singled to left field. Grant would be wiped away on a double play. Tyler Jones drew a two-out walk before Travis Cross' pop-up fell near the mound. Kutztown attempted to get Jones at third but the errant throw allowed Jones to score to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Caleb Peterson kept the Golden Bears at-bay allowing one hit in the fourth and fifth innings.
The Hawks batted around in the bottom of the fifth inning as Justin Winslow started the rally with a single through the left side. Winslow advanced to second on the passed ball before Tyler Jones drew a full-count walk. Travis Cross evened the game with a double to right to score Winslow. Noah Evington tried to stretch his extra base hit into a triple allowing Jones and Cross to score to lead 4-2.
Jack Kane doubled down the left field line to continue the rally. Brock Cross and Dallas Trevena were issued free passes to load the bases. Trenton Lee battled back after being down 2-0 to draw a walk and force home a run to lead 5-2. The rally ended with a pair of strikeouts.
Kutztown looked to rally in the sixth inning getting a runner to second before two punchouts were recorded by Jarret Henderson. The Golden Bears would get runners on the corners but a fly out ended the contest.
The umpires would call the contest in the middle of the sixth because of darkness.
