Chowan Falls Short In Opener Against Wolves

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Chowan Men's Lacrosse team came up short in a back-and-forth affair in the season opener on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Jackson Downs led the team with three points notching two goals and an assist.  Patrick Egan and Jaxon Martin tallied two goals each.

Austin Lee, Quintin Bender, and Noah Holloway found the back of the net once.  Bender added an assist.

Newberry held the advantage at the face-off spot going 22-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

After over 10 minutes of scoreless action, Jaxon Martin put the Hawks on the board first with an unassisted goal off a rebound.  Newberry answered a minute later to even the score, 1-1.

Second Quarter:

Early in the quarter, Jackson Downs found the back of the net for his first collegiate goal to lead 2-1.

Newberry countered with two quick goals to take the lead 3-2 with 13:00 left in the half.

Austin Lee evened the score at 3-all midway through the quarter.  Newberry took a one goal lead with 4:33 left in the half.

Following a Chowan timeout with 1:28 left, Quintin Bender would find Jackson Downs for the goal with under a minute to play to go 4-4 into the locker room.

Third Quarter:

The scoring would slow in the third quarter as both sides found the back of the net in the period.  Noah Holloway found the back of the net just 1:38 into the quarter.

Midway through the quarter, Newberry found the equalizing tally to keep the score even at 5-all.

Jaxon Martin tried to put the Hawks on top but his attempt was saved.  Newberry took a 6-5 lead into the fourth quarter despite close attempts that were denied by Slater Bender.

Fourth Quarter:

Newberry opened their lead to 9-5 with three quick goals in the period, two on man-up situations for the Wolves.

Patrick Egan ended the run with an unassisted goal.  Just over a minute later, Jaxon Martin netted his second goal of the game with a man-down goal to trim the deficit to 9-7.

The Wolves quickly pushed their lead back to four, 11-7.  Jackson Downs returned the favor finding Quintin Bender for his first tally of the season.

Patrick Egan closed the gap to 11-9 with a goal with 33 seconds left as time ran out on the Hawks.

UP NEXT

Chowan hosts Coker in the first of three home matches on Wednesday, February 5.  Opening face-off is at 3pm.
