Deja Vu For Chowan Against Mount Olive In Road Loss

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Déjà vu for the Chowan Women's Basketball team against the rival Mount Olive Trojans as UMO pulled away down the stretch to hand the Hawks a 73-67 loss in Conference Carolinas action on the road on Wednesday evening.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Mariah Coker made a huge adjustment after the past two contest to score 20 points with eight rebounds and five assists.

Olivia Gaither and Monique Jones chipped in with nine points off the bench.  Jahkeria Bagby and Destiny Robinson netted eight points each.  Robinson grabbed seven rebounds.

Chowan shot 52.9% from the floor in the third quarter.  Mount Olive countered with 50.0% in the second half and 11-15 from the stripe.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Jahkeria Bagby put the Hawks on the board on the first possession after the Hawks won the opening tip-off.  Bagby would add a pair from the stripe before Mount Olive countered with a 10-0 run.

Mariah Coker ended the run with a layup to cut the deficit to 10-6 and snapped a four minute scoreless run.  Coker recorded another layup to finish her own miss.  Aniah Patterson regained the lead for the Hawks with a triple, 11-10, with just over a minute to play in the quarter.

Mount Olive took the lead back on the next possession, the Trojans led 14-11 after the opening quarter.

Second Quarter:

Mount Olive posted the first tally in the quarter before Aniah Patterson knocked down her second triple in the contest to trim the deficit to 16-14.  The Trojans rattled off six straight points before a Mariah Coker layup ended the small run.

Olivia Gaither knocked down a triple to cut the deficit in half, 22-19, to force a Trojan timeout.  UMO answered with five straight points to maintain their advantage.  Gaither produced a jumper and Mariah Coker connected from deep to keep the Hawks within reach, 29-24.

Jahkeria Bagby converted a pair from the stripe before the Trojans answered with a triple at the other end.  Destiny Robinson produced a layup in the final seconds of the quarter.

Mount Olive led 35-28 at the intermission.

Third Quarter:

Just like the first quarter, Jahkeria Bagby posted the first bucket for the Hawks.  Destiny Robinson added a putback basket to cut the deficit to 35-32.  Following a Trojan bucket, Mariah Coker knocked down a triple to move the score back to one possession.

Destiny Robinson netted a pair from the stripe before the Trojans found the answer at the other end.  Mariah Coker knocked down a triple to close the gap to 41-40.  Keibra Hopkins stole the ensuing possession and converted at the other end to give the Hawks a 42-41 advantage midway through the third quarter.

Out of the media timeout, Mariah Coker would go 1-2 from the stripe to continue the short run for the Hawks.  Monique Jones added a jumper to push the lead to 45-41.  UMO slowed the run with a bucket before Jones recorded a putback to keep the run moving.

Mount Olive regained the lead with two minutes to play in the quarter with the old-fashioned three point play and a layup to led 48-47.  Monique Jones shifted the lead back to Chowan with a three-point play of her own following a coast-to-coast attack by Jones.

UMO evened the contest at 50-all, but Olivia Gaither kept the Hawks on top with a layup.  The score would be knotted up again by the end of the quarter with a pair of freebies by the Trojans, 52-all.

Fourth Quarter:

Both teams played strong defense early as Mount Olive would find the bottom of the net to lead 56-52 early in the quarter.  Olivia Gaither knocked down a jumper prior to the Trojans answered at the other end.

Mariah Coker cleaned up her own miss to offset the freebies by the Trojans.  Defense continued to pose a problem for both teams with a couple of scoreless minutes.  Midway through the final stanza, UMO pushed their lead back to six, 62-56.

Destiny Robinson ended the scoreless run for the Hawks converting the front-end of the three-point play.  Mount Olive converted from behind the arc before Mariah Coker hit a layup, 65-60.

Mount Olive started pulling away with two minutes remaining in regulation grabbing points at the stripe and in the paint.  Monique Jones added a layup and Keibra Hopkins added a layup and a three pointer as the Hawks fell 73-67.

UP NEXT

Chowan returns home to take on King in a Conference Carolinas contest on Saturday, January 11.  Tip-off against the Tornado is slated for 2pm.
