Balanced Scoring Not Enough Against King

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team tallied balanced scoring in a 68-52 loss at home in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Monique Jones led the team with nine points and nine rebounds.  Mariah Coker posted eight points, while Keibra Hopkins and Olivia Gaither chipped in with seven points each.

Brianna Copeland tallied six points in just five minutes of action.  Chowan committed 18 turnovers leading to 19 points for the Tornado.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Keibra Hopkins hit a jumper to put the Hawks on the board in the contest.  King rattled off six straight points to lead 8-2 before Monique Jones scored in transition.

After a two minute stretch of scoreless basketball, Aniah Patterson scored to cut the deficit to two, 8-6, midway through the opening quarter.

Chowan picked up points from the stripe from Kaylah Henderson and Emaree Hinton.  Monique Jones added a layup to keep the score close, trailing 14-11.

Olivia Gaither added a pair from the stripe and Teylahna Green connected from the floor to trail 18-15 at the end of the opening stanza.

Second Quarter:

King held the Hawks scoreless for the opening 5:34 of the quarter and went on a 9-0 run to lead 27-15.  Olivia Gaither slowed the run with a jumper in the paint.

The Tornado stretched their lead to 30-17 before Chowan countered with a 9-0 run to cut the deficit back to four, 30-26.  Keibra Hopkins started the run with an old-fashioned three-point play.  Hopkins added a coast-to-coast basket off a steal.  Kaylah Henderson and Demetria Bland chipped in on the run with a layup each.

King added the final four points of the half to lead 34-26 at the break.

Third Quarter:

Chowan and King traded baskets the first three minutes of the second half as Monique Jones and Destiny Robinson contributed to the scoring.

The Tornado went on an 8-2 run, with Destiny Robinson's layup as the lone tally for the Hawks, to stretch their lead to 46-32.

Neither side could find points for a three minute stretch until Monique Jones went 1-2 from the line and added a layup.  Olivia Gaither knocked down a triple to cut the deficit back to single-digits, 46-38.

King led 48-38 at the end of the quarter.

Fourth Quarter:

The first five minutes of the quarter went all King's way with a 13-3 run to lead 63-41.  Mariah Coker knocked down a triple.  Brianna Copeland ended the run with a three pointer to spark an 8-0 run.  Coker connected from deep and converted a layup in transition.

Brianna Copeland tallied another three pointer for the final points for the Hawks as King took the victory 68-52.

UP NEXT

Chowan travels to South Carolina to take on Limestone in a Conference Carolinas midweek clash on Wednesday, January 15.  Tip-off is slated for 5:30pm.
