MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team produced a valiant effort against nationally-ranked Belmont Abbey in Conference Carolinas action on Tuesday evening.

Destiny Robinson notched her second double-double in a row with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Monique Jones added 16 points and six rebounds.
Aniah Patterson, Olivia Gaither, and Demetria Bland recorded 11 points each. Mariah Coker posted a season-high nine assists.
Chowan shot 48.5% from the floor in the second half and held Belmont Abbey to 34.4%.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter:
Chowan jumped out to an early 5-0 lead as Aniah Patterson put the Hawks on the board with a jumper. Monique Jones knocked down a triple in transition. Belmont Abbey evened the score at 6-all before Mariah Coker and Destiny Robinson added a bucket in the paint.
Belmont Abbey took control of the quarter with an 18-5 run to end the quarter, 24-15. Monique Jones added a layup and Olivia Gaither connected from deep.
Second Quarter:
Just like the first quarter, Chowan scored quickly with back-to-back buckets by Demetria Bland and Jahkeria Bagby. Olivia Gaither scored on a layup before a 17-4 run pushed the BAC lead to their largest of 19, 44-25.
Aniah Patterson chipped in with two freebies, and Destiny Robinson added a layup. A bucket by Icez Barnett and Aniah Patterson ended the run.
Demetria Bland and Destiny Robinson cut into the deficit before the half as the Crusaders led 51-34.
Third Quarter:
Chowan came out firing on a 12-2 run to start the half to cut the deficit to single-digits, 53-46. Mariah Coker started the run with a pair from the stripe. Aniah Patterson and Monique Jones added a jumper each. Olivia Gaither knocked down a pair from behind the arc to close the gap.
The Hawks stayed close as Teylahna Green countered a BAC triple, and Demetria Bland added a layup to offset the free throws. Bland added a pair from the stripe and Keibra Hopkins knocked down a triple to close the gap to 61-56 with 3:34 remaining in the quarter.
After a five point run by both sides, another five point run by the Crusaders allowed BAC to lead 71-61 at the end of the quarter.
Fourth Quarter:
Monique Jones recorded a layup to keep the deficit in single-digits, but back-to-back triples by the Crusaders pushed the advantage to 14, 77-63. The Crusaders lead moved to 18, 82-64, before a 12-2 run trimmed the deficit back to eight, 84-76.
Monique Jones started the rally of three-point plays followed by Destiny Robinson and a triple by Mariah Coker. The Hawks would get within seven, 89-82, as another three-point play by Robinson and a trey by Aniah Patterson closed the gap.
The Hawks would run out of time to complete the comeback fully as Monique Jones registered the final bucket for the Hawks.
