Hawks Volleyball Picks Up First League Win

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – In their second Conference Carolinas match of the season, the Chowan Volleyball team picked up their first-ever win in league play with a 3-1 victory over Southern Wesleyan.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Chloe Putnam led the Hawks with a career-high 16 kills.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez notched a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs.

Katie Houston recorded 21 digs to lead the defense as Sydney Hiner (16), Hannah Sladick (14), and Ciara Ortega (10) all recorded double digit digs.

Chowan hit .281 and .343 in the third and fourth set to finish off the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set:

The Hawks would not record their first kill until Ann-Marie registered one to put the Hawks up 4-3.  With the Warriors leading 6-5, Chowan rattled off five straight points to force a timeout.  Johnson started the attack with a kill, followed by a service ace and then a kill by Anixa Rosa-Martinez.

Two kills by Anixa Rosa-Martinez and a kill by Chloe Putnam pushed the Hawks lead to 18-9.

Ann-Marie Johnson notched two more kills to put the Hawks up 23-13.  A sneaky dump attack by Ciara Ortega and a kill by Chloe Putnam allowed Chowan to take the opening set 25-14.

Second Set:

Chowan would hold a 5-3 lead early in the set as Sydney Hiner posted two kills.

A string of errors by Southern Wesleyan allowed Chowan to lead 12-9.  Ciara Ortega posted two service aces in the run.

SWU would fight back to even the set at 16-all.  The Warriors would push ahead 21-17.  Chloe Putnam ended the small run with a kill.

The Warriors continued to push forward taking the set 25-19 to even the match.

Third Set:

After getting a block to start the set by Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Ann-Marie Johnson, the Hawks had to rally back to regain the lead.  Rosa-Martinez recorded two kills to take a 5-4 lead.

Following a Chowan timeout, the Hawks would score six straight points to force a SWU timeout.  Chloe Putnam added two kills during the stretch.

A block and a kill by Ann-Marie Johnson extended the lead to 17-12.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Chloe Putnam teamed up with a kill each to put the Hawks ahead 20-13.

Chloe Putnam finished off the set with a pair of kills to give the Hawks the 25-16 set win.

Fourth Set:

Chowan would jump out to an early 8-3 advantage.  Hannah Sladick started the run with a kill.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Sladick would trade kills during the run.

A pair of kills by Chloe Putnam pushed the lead to 11-7 after a small run by SWU.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez would put down an attack to double up the Warriors, 16-8.

With a 17-11 lead, Chowan would take control of the contest with seven straight points to take the score to 24-11.  Alyssa Carroll registered a block to spark the run.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Chloe Putnam notched two kills each.

The final point would award the Hawks the victory on a Warriors error.

Chowan has the week off until Converse makes the trip to Murfreesboro on Friday, October 4 for a Conference Carolinas divisional contest.  First serve is at 7pm.
