Errors Costly For Chowan In Sweep By Converse

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team suffered a straight sets loss to Converse in Conference Carolinas play on Friday evening at home.

Chowan was outhit .290 to .093 in the match as the Hawks racked up 24 attack errors.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez paced the offense with 13 kills.  Sydney Hiner chipped in with nine kills to go with her 10 digs.

Ciara Ortega dished out 30 assists.  Katie Houston produced 17 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set:

Both teams traded points and rallies during the opening set as Hannah Sladick put the first kill down for the Hawks.  A kill by Ann-Marie Johnson and Ciara Ortega gave the Hawks a 5-3 lead.

After three straight points by the Valkyries, Chowan countered with eight of the next nine to force a timeout.  Sydney Hiner started the run with a kill followed by Anixa Rosa-Martinez with two kills.  Chloe Putnam added to the advantage with a kill along with another one by Rosa-Martinez.

Converse would chip away running off four straight points to close the gap to 15-13.  Both sides traded points as Sydney Hiner gave the Hawks a 23-20 lead and forced a timeout.

The Valkyries rattled off four straight points to take the lead 24-23.  A kill and a block would allow Converse to take the opening set 26-24.

Second Set:

Converse opened up a 10-2 lead in the second set as the Hawks would not record a point themselves until Chloe Putnam notched a block trailing 10-3.

Chowan would close the gap slightly after a service ace by Alyssa Carroll, 11-6.  The Hawks would hit -.111 in the set allowing Converse to lead 20-10 before taking the set 25-13.

Third Set:

Hannah Sladick and Ann-Marie Johnson notched kills to open the set.  Sydney Hiner and Johnson added to it to lead 6-3.

Converse responded to even the set at 7-all and 10-all before the Hawks had to counter to knot the score up.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Sydney Hiner aided the Hawks with kills.

A three point spurt by the Valkyries to lead 20-16 was all they needed to keep the Hawks at-bay.  Chowan would close the gap to 21-20 and 24-23 with a kill by Sydney Hiner.

Chowan hosts Limestone in an East Division Conference Carolinas contest on Saturday, October 5.  First serve is scheduled for 2pm.
