CU Offense Stalls In Straight Sets Loss To VSU

PETERSBURG, VA. – The offense struggled to get going for the Chowan Volleyball team in a straight set loss to Virginia State on the road on Tuesday evening.

Chowan's offense produced a total of 16 kills in the contest.  Hannah Sladick led the Hawks with four kills.  Ann-Marie Johnson and Anixa Rosa-Martinez notched three kills each.

The Hawks committed 13 service errors in the match.  Sydney Hiner, Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Katie Houston posted six digs apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set:

Hannah Sladick put the Hawks on the board early.  A service ace by Sydney Hiner would even the set up at 4-all.

Following a kill by Ann-Marie Johnson, Chowan would stall as Virginia State doubled up the Hawks 12-6.

The Hawks would trim the deficit to 16-14 benefitting from Trojan errors.  Chloe Putnam notched a kill to keep the deficit minimal.

The Trojans kept the Hawks in the set with errors.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez recorded the final point for the Hawks as VSU took the set 25-22.

Second Set:

Virginia State opened the second set with an 8-4 advantage.  Ann-Marie Johnson registered a kill in the early running.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted a kill before a string of errors on both sides pushed the score to 14-8 in favor of the Trojans.

Nyah Powers and Ann-Marie Johnson tallied a kill each to close the gap to 16-12.  Hannah Sladick finished the set with two kills as VSU took the set 25-17.

Third Set:

The Trojans would open the set with a 12-5 lead as Nyah Powers and Sydney Hiner registered a kill each.

VSU pushed their lead to 19-9 on attacking miscues by the Hawks.  Chloe Putnam would register a kill and a service ace down the stretch.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Hannah Sladick added to the scoring before the Trojans took the set 25-16.

Chowan will return home for a non-conference match on Friday, September 20 as the Hawks host Frostburg State.  First serve is at 5pm.
