MURFREESBORO, N.C. – In front of the home crowd for the first time this season, the Chowan Volleyball team did not disappoint as the Hawks picked up a straight sets victory over former league rival, Shaw, at home on Thursday evening.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
One of the lone returners from last season, Sydney Hiner, led the Hawks with a double-double notching 10 kills and 13 digs. Freshman, Anixa Rosa-Martinez recorded eight kills and 12 digs. Katie Houston would tally 13 digs as well.
Ciara Ortega and Alexa Woolson dished out 14 and 10 assists respectively. Nyah Powers recorded a solo block and two assisted blocks.
As a team, Chowan recorded 11 service aces led by Ann-Marie Johnson and Anixa Rosa-Martinez with three each.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set:
Shaw was given an early 3-0 lead off two errors by the Hawks. Chowan would rally with three kills by Sydney Hiner to even the set at 4-all.
A service ace by Ciara Ortega and a kill by Anixa Rosa-Martinez gave the Hawks the lead 10-7 and never relinquish it. Chloe Putnam and Ann-Marie Johnson joined in on the attack with a kill each. Rosa-Martinez produced a kill to give the Hawks an 18-13 advantage and force a Shaw timeout.
Hannah Sladick and Chloe Putnam continued the assault with a kill each to stretch the lead to 22-14.
Ciara Ortega served up an ace to finish off the set, 25-16.
Second Set:
Nyah Powers put the Hawks on the board in the second set with a kill. Sydney Hiner followed suit to keep the set close early.
Katie Houston produced a service ace to knot the set at 7-all. Shaw would go on a small run to force a timeout leading 12-8. Following the timeout, Chowan rattled off five straight points to take the lead 13-12 and force a Shaw timeout. Nyah Powers and Chloe Putnam registered a block to give the Hawks the lead.
Anixa Rosa-Martinez kept the Hawks on top with a service ace out of the break and a kill. Chloe Putnam also tallied an ace.
Shaw would even the set at 18, 19, 20, and 22-all before a kill by Sydney Hiner and a service ace by Chloe Putnam took the set 25-22.
Third Set:
The momentum continued in front of the home fans jumping out to an early 7-2 lead. Ann-Marie Johnson, Anixa Rosa-Martinez, and Chloe Putnam registered kills during the spurt.
The Hawks would double up the Bears, 12-6, with back-to-back aces by Ann-Marie Johnson. A block and a kill by Nyah Powers gave the Hawks a 15-8 advantage and force the final timeout by Shaw.
Nyah Powers, Ann-Marie Johnson, and Sydney Hiner produced a kill to stretch the lead to 21-13. Hannah Sladick notched a kill before the Bears went on the prowl. Shaw closed the gap to 22-20 and forced a timeout.
Two errors by the Bears allowed the Hawks to within one of the match. Sydney Hiner would finish off the set and match with a kill.

Chowan heads out on the road to take on Catawba in a non-conference match on Saturday, September 14. First serve is slated for 7pm.
