PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team battled tough in their first match of the season in a 3-1 loss to UNC Pembroke on the road on Tuesday evening.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez led the team with nine kills and 14 digs. Sydney Hiner posted eight kills while hitting a team leading .421.
Hannah Sladick tallied six kills, while Ann-Marie Johnson posted five. Ciara Ortega recorded 21 assists. Katie Houston notched a team-high 17 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set:
Nyah Powers would record her first kill to give the Hawks an early 1-0 lead. After four straight points by the Braves, Chowan countered with six points to take a 7-4 as Hannah Sladick and Nyah Powers recorded kills.
After a kill by Chloe Putnam and Hannah Sladick, the Braves ran off nine points to lead 16-11. Back-to-back kills by Anixa Rosa-Martinez closed the gap slightly. Sladick posted a kill to trim the deficit to 21-18 before the Braves notched the next four of the next five points to take the set 25-19.
Second Set:
Ann-Marie Johnson and Hannah Sladick put the Hawks on the board early in the second set as the Braves led 10-5.
UNCP opened the contest up to an 18-7 advantage until Anixa Rosa-Martinez ended the run with a kill. Alexa Woolson recorded two service aces in the set.
The Braves took the set 25-14.
Third Set:
The Hawks rallied in the third set as Anixa Rosa-Martinez started off the set with a kill. Sydney Hiner and Ann-Marie Johnson posted a 5-3 lead with a pair of kills.
The back-and-forth set continued with a kill by Sydney Hiner and two straight kills by Nyah Powers to even the match at 13-all.
Anixa Rosa-Martinez served the Hawks to a set victory with two service aces and Sydney Hiner tallied three kills to take the set 25-20.
Fourth Set:
An early 10-3 deficit forced the Hawks to fight from behind in the set. The deficit would increase to 21-10 before Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted a kill to end the rally. Ann-Marie Johnson notched a block and a service ace in the set.
The Braves would take the set 25-15.
