Chowan Earns Postseason Berth, Falls To NGU

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The Chowan Baseball team dropped the final two league contests of the season against nationally-ranked North Greenville on Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Nick Rose picked up two of the four hits in the early game.  Brock Cross recorded two hits on the afternoon and three RBI. 

Harley Davidson and Jared Fry recorded a hit in the doubleheader.

Jack Kane went 2-3 in the night cap.

Vinny Puma took the loss in his third career start tossing a career-high 5.0 innings.  Puma struggled in the sixth inning after limiting NGU to two runs in the first five innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Chowan 2, #9 North Greenville 10

Nick Rose picked up the first hit in the contest to start the game with a full-count single to right field.  Rose would swipe second and be left stranded in scoring position.

North Greenville would score five runs in the bottom of the first as starting pitcher Ryan Gallaccio recorded one out.  Slade Cowan picked up two strikeouts to end the inning.

NGU added a run in the bottom of the third and four more runs in the fourth to lead 10-0.

Jared Fry picked up an infield single in the fifth inning but a fielder's choice wiped out the runner.

The Hawks were able to get on the board in the sixth inning as Anthony Jefferson drew a lead-off walk.  Marquise Lanier was hit by a pitch and Jack Kane drew a walk to load the bases.  Brock Cross singled home a run before Trenton Lee brought home another run with a bases loaded walk, 10-2.

Nick Rose picked up a single in the seventh and moved to second on a passed ball to round out the base runners in the contest for Chowan.

Game Two: Chowan 2, #9 North Greenville 14

Jack Kane singled through the right side in the top of the first inning.  Trenton Lee drew a walk to start the second inning.  Harley Davidson singled to right before a double play ended the threat.

Chowan would strike first in the contest in the third inning as Anthony Jefferson led off with a walk and swiped second base.  Jefferson moved to third on a ground out.  Jack Kane was intentionally walked and took second.  Brock Cross drove home two runs with a single to right but was thrown out trying for a double.

North Greenville answered in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run and two base hits to even the score at 2-all.

NGU would break the game open in the sixth inning with an eight run frame to lead 10-2.  The Crusaders would push across two runs in the seventh and eighth innings to lead 14-2.

Jack Kane doubled down the line with one out in the ninth.  Kane would be left in scoring position.

UP NEXT

Chowan was able to secure the eighth and final seed of the Conference Carolinas Baseball Championship.  The Hawks will face Belmont Abbey in a play-in-game on Wednesday, April 24 in Tigerville, S.C. on the campus of North Greenville.
