Chowan Baseball Walks Off In Split Against Limestone

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – A mammoth walk-off home run led the Chowan Baseball team to a split against Limestone in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday afternoon in a pair of one-run contests.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES

Marquise Lanier led the Hawks going 3-7 at the plate with a home run.

Jack Kane, Nick Rose, Brock Cross and Anthony Jefferson recorded two hits each.  Jared Fry launched a home run with three RBI.

Vinny Puma pitched 6.1 innings of relief allowing one hit and struck out nine.  Puma picked up the win in the early game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Chowan 6, Limestone 5

Limestone jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Limestone hit a home run.

The Saints pushed the advantage to 4-0 collecting three hits in the second.

Chowan started making a move in the bottom of the second inning as Trenton Lee, Harley Davidson, and Nicholas Lees picked up singles but left the bases juiced.

The Hawks were able to get on the board in the third inning to cut the deficit to 4-3.  Brock Cross singled up the middle before Marquise Lanier drew a walk.  Cross and Lanier would move up a bag after a ground out.  Jared Fry would go deep to right field for a three-run shot.

Chowan will take the lead in the fourth inning plating two runs to lead 5-4.  Nicholas Lees drew a one out walk.  Anthony Jefferson singled to left center.  Nick Rose singled and moved to second on the throw home as Lees scored.  Brock Cross would deliver a sac fly to lead 5-4.

Limestone evened the score in the sixth inning.  Vinny Puma would pitch the final 1.1 innings grabbing a ground out and three strikeouts.

Marquise Lanier would deliver the biggest hit of the season as Lanier launched a pitch over the left field fence, which landed at the base of the flag pole in front of the Helms Center, for the walk-off victory.

Game Two: Chowan 1, Limestone 2

Anthony Jefferson nearly put the Hawks on the board in the bottom of the first inning.  Anthony Jefferson drew a walk before swiping second and third, but was left stranded.

Limestone posted another home run in the series with a two run shot to lead 2-0 in the fourth.

The Hawks clawed back in the bottom of the fifth with a run.  Trenton Lee walked to lead off the inning.  Noah Evington was hit by a pitch before Anthony Jefferson singled home Lee.  Nick Rose singled to load the bases.  The Saints were able to strike out the next two batters to end the threat.

The score would hold despite an effort by the Hawks in the eighth.  Marquise Lanier singled and swiped second.  Lanier would advance to third on a balk but would be left stranded.

UP NEXT

Chowan will hit the road to face Southern Wesleyan in a Conference Carolinas series next weekend, Friday-Saturday, March 15-16 in Central, S.C.  First pitch is slate for 4pm on Friday.
