Misfortune Strikes As Hawks Fall To Patriots

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Chowan Baseball team committed five errors leading to early runs for Francis Marion in the series opener on Tuesday afternoon in a 14-6 loss for the Hawks.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Brock Cross, Marquise Lanier, and Dallas Trevena picked up two hits each.  Nick Rose led the team with two RBI.

The Hawks defensively recorded five errors leading to five unearned runs.  Robert Burns tallied 3.0 innings of work allowing two hits, four unearned runs and three strikeouts.

Phillip Ashlock pitched one inning of scoreless ball.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Brock Cross picked up a two out single in the top of the first before Francis Marion did their damage.  The Patriots took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run in the bottom of the first.  Two straight errors allowed FMU to scratch across another run for the 2-0 advantage.

Francis Marion widened the advantage to 4-0 with two runs in the second.  Noah Evington doubled to start the third inning but was stranded in scoring position.

The Patriots tallied another run in the third inning as an error with one out led to a run.  The Hawks rolled a double-play to end the inning.

In the fifth inning, Dallas Trevena singled to start the inning.  Noah Evington drew a full count walk but a double-play ended the rally.

Another error in the fifth inning by the Hawks prolonged the inning allowing three runs to score as the Patriots led 8-0.

Chowan was able to break through on the scoreboard in the sixth inning.  Nick Rose drew a lead-off walk before Marquise Lanier singled to left and Jack Kane brought home Rose on a single to left center.  Lanier would score on a wild pitch to close the gap to 8-2.

Francis Marion responded with a five run sixth inning as five hits including a grand slam led to the big inning, 13-2.

The Hawks rallied in the seventh inning with three runs.  Noah Evington started the inning with a walk before Anthony Jefferson singled to left.  Nick Rose doubled down the line to score Jefferson and Evington.  Brock Cross picked up a RBI single to score Rose and cut the deficit to 13-5.

After the final Patriot run in the seventh inning, Chowan added their final tally in the eighth inning.  Jared Fry drew a walk before Dallas Trevena singled up the middle.  Back-to-back groundouts produced a run.

Chowan wraps up the short two-game series with Francis Marion on Wednesday, March 6.  First pitch is slated for 3pm.
