FEATURED HAWKS: Ryan Martin, Soccer

Every month throughout the calendar year, Chowan Athletics will be highlighting student-athletes in the new series FEATURED HAWKS to help student-athletes tell their story.

WORDS TO LIVE BY:
Our team's mantra is to "keep doing us". No matter what adversities come our way, we stay focused and motivated to achieve our greatest potential.

WHAT COURSE HAVE YOU TAKEN AT CHOWAN THAT HAS INSPIRED YOU?
Economics has been the most inspiring course I've taken at Chowan so far because the course goes through the business cycle and explains the ups and downs that the economy endures. I take that knowledge with me onto the soccer field. I've learned that even when I'm not at my best, it is important to adapt and overcome to get back on top of my game.

HOW DO YOU SEE YOURSELF FIVE YEARS AFTER GRADUATION?
After graduating from Chowan, I see myself working in cyber security for the U.S. government.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY OUTSIDE OF PLAYING SOCCER?
I enjoy coaching kids how to be better soccer players as well as better individuals in everyday life. I know they look to me as a leader and I work hard to ensure that I am worthy of their admiration.

HOW HAVE YOU MADE THE CU COMMUNITY YOURS?
I've found that one of the most important things about college is to help others in times of need. I also practice not giving up on anybody, especially teammates. I see our team as a family and when one member struggles, we all embrace their pain together.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A FRESHMAN LOOKING TO ENROLL AT CHOWAN IN THE FUTURE?
To future students, I advise you to be nice and respectful to your teachers because they are always looking out for you and have your greatest interest in mind. Don't take the education your family is funding for granted.

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE CHOWAN?
I had never heard of Chowan until I was recruited to play soccer. But once I got the opportunity to do research on the school, I knew this was my chance to form a better connection with Christ and pursue aspirations I only dared dream about.

WHAT IS A SUCCESS STORY YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED WHILE AT CHOWAN?
One of the greatest accomplishments I've experienced on the men's soccer team was when we defeated the national champions, Wingate, 1-0 on our home turf.
