Young Hawks Lead CU Softball To First Win Of Season

WILSON, N.C. – The Chowan Softball team picked up their first win of the season in a split against Barton on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

EmaRae Flores picked up the win in the circle in the nightcap tossing a complete game allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits.

Leah Spiggle, Alexis Grim, and Brooklynne Johnson recorded two hits each in the win.  Grim recorded two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Chowan 0, Barton 13 (5 innings)

Beth Walker singled down the right field line.  Brittany Parson walked but unable to produce a run.

Barton scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning as two walks and a hit by pitch to start the inning allowed the rally.  An error and a single plated the opening runs of the contest, 3-0.

The Bulldogs added two runs in the second inning as three walks loaded the bases with two outs.  A single allowed the runs to score and extend the lead to 5-0.

Barton pushed their advantage to 11-0 in the bottom of the third and added two more in the fourth to lead 13-0.

Brittany Parson doubled in the fourth inning but was unable to come around to score.

Game Two: Chowan 6, Barton 3

The line-up completely changed in the second contest as the Hawks' line-up featured six freshman and four sophomores.

Chowan scored in the second inning to lead 2-0.  Carleigh Wildeboer started off the inning with a single to right field.  Meredith Morgan drew a walk before Brooklynne Johnson's sacrifice bunt pushed them into scoring position.  Hannah Naifeh and Kelsey Sonntag to score Wildeboer and Morgan for the early lead.

EmaRae Flores kept base runners to a minimum in the early allowing three runners in the first three innings.

The Hawks had a chance to push across another run in the fifth inning as Jesse Gentry started the inning with a double.  Alexis Grim singled to right and moved to second on the throw.  The rally would come up short as three straight outs were recorded.

Chowan add three runs in the sixth inning to stretch the lead to 5-0.  Kelsey Sonntag drew a walk to spark the rally.  Leah Spiggle singled before Kerrin Mailhot reached on an error to score Sonntag.  Alexis Grim doubled down the left field line to score Spiggle and Mailhot.

Barton clawed back into the contest with a three run output in the sixth inning.  The Bulldogs were beneficiaries of three hits, an error and a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Chowan added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning to lead 6-3.  Meredith Morgan and Brooklynne Johnson started the inning with a single.  Hannah Naifeh moved the runners up a base with a ground out.  Leah Spiggle singled to left to plate Morgan.

UP NEXT

Chowan travels to Mount Olive, N.C. to face Mount Olive in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, February 6.  First pitch is at 2pm.
