Hawks Split Series Finale Against Coker

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Baseball team improved to 2-1-1 on the season after splitting the final two games of the series against Coker on Sunday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES

Jared Fry and Marquise Lanier led the team with three hits each.  Lanier added two doubles and a RBI.

Tyler Jones and Nick Rose recorded their first home runs of the season.  Jones recorded a double, while Rose added two RBI.

Jack Kane picked up the win on the mound in the night cap tossing 4.2 innings.  Trenton Lee picked up the save tossing 1.1 innings of shutout ball.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Chowan 3, Coker 7

Coker jumped on the board in the opening inning as a one-out single and a swipe of second led to an early runner in scoring position.  The Cobras converted with a two-out single allowing the opening run to score.

Chowan looked to answer in the bottom of the inning as Tyler Jones led off the inning with a walk.  A double play took the Hawks off the bags.  Jared Fry picked up a single and Marquise Lanier drew a walk before moving up 90 feet on the balk.  A lineout ended the threat.

Coker tallied three runs in the top of the third to lead 4-0 as a two-out error sparked a rally.  Three straight hits led to the Cobra's runs.

The Hawks were able to plate a run in the bottom of the third inning.  Tyler Jones doubled down the left field line to start off the inning.  Nick Rose drew a walk and moved up a base on the wild pitch.  Jared Fry hit a sacrifice fly to plate Jones to trim the deficit to 4-1.

Coker added a run in the fifth on a sac fly.  Tyler Jones cut the deficit to 5-2 with a solo home run to left center.

The teams traded a run in the sixth inning as singles by Marquise Lanier and Jack Kane started the rally.  Trenton Lee produced a two-out RBI single to move the score to 6-3.

The Cobras added the final tally of the contest in the top of the seventh inning for the 7-3 victory.

Game Two: Chowan 8, Coker 3

The Hawks grabbed the momentum early in the contest as Tyler Jones led the inning off with a walk.  Jones swiped second before Nick Rose homered to right field to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

Chowan would explode for five run in the bottom of the third inning.  Nick Rose and Jared Fry to start the inning forcing a pitching change.  Marquise Lanier doubled down the third base line to score Rose.  Brock Cross doubled to left to score Fry and Lanier to lead 5-0.  Noah Cartwright continued the rally with a single before swiping second.  Nicholas Lees drew a walk to load the bases with one out.  Noah Evington hit a sacrifice fly to stretch the lead to 6-0.  A wild pitch allowed Lees to score for the 7-0 advantage.

Jack Kane sat down nine of the first ten batters of the contest.  Kane would allow a single in the fourth inning but picked off the runner.

Coker was able to get on the scoreboard in the fifth inning as three doubles allowed two runs to score.  Vinny Puma shut the door for the final out of the inning to keep the score at 7-2.  Coker added a tally in the sixth inning before Trenton Lee held the Cobras off the scoreboard for the final 1.1 innings.

Chowan scored their final tally in the bottom of the sixth inning as Jared Fry walked to start the inning and swiped second.  Harley Davidson delivered a pinch hit single to score Fry for the 8-3 victory.

Chowan continues the home stand as the Hawks host Clarion in a three-game series starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, February 9.  First pitch is at 12pm.
