Hawks Basketball Host Panthers For Senior Day

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Men's and Women's Basketball teams welcome Virginia Union to the Helms Center for the regular season finale on Saturday, February 23.

Jada Lee, Jordan Pettaway, Demetrius Sanders, Danielle Weldon, and Joanne Williams will be honored for Senior Day.

HAWKS FILES – WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Chowan picked up the CIAA Northern Division win against Lincoln (Pa.) 57-55 on Thursday to improve to 13-13 on the season and 9-7 in the CIAA.  The Hawks are 3-6 in the Northern Division and sit in fourth place.

Danielle Weldon leads the team with 13.8 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.  Weldon sits with 965 career points and 679 career rebounds.

Jada Lee is second on the team with 10.0 points per game.  Mariah Coker chips in with 8.9 points a game and has 100 assists on the season.

PANTHERS PROWL

Virginia Union enters the contest ranked 13th in the country with a 23-2 overall record and 14-2 in the CIAA.  The Panthers have already secured the top spot in the Northern Division with an 8-1 record.

Shareka McNeil leads the team with 23.0 points per game.  Ifunanya Okoye and Nicole Floyd chip in with 10.9 and 10.0 points per outing.

The Panthers have lost their last two trips to the Helms Center against LaToya Jones.

HAWKS HIGHLIGHTS– MEN'S BASKETBALL

Chowan dropped their seventh straight contest in the loss against Lincoln to fall to 12-13 on the season and 5-11 in the CIAA.

Timothy Bing leads the Hawks offensively sitting in fifth in the CIAA in scoring at 16.6 points per night.  Demetrius Sanders adds 15.3 points on 50.5% shooting from the floor.  Gus Rowland averages 14.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, while leading the CIAA in assists (180) and steals (61), both single-season records at Chowan.

Michael Kelly rounds out the scoring with 11.8 points and 7.4 rebounds per night.

Gus Rowland moved to second in the country in assists per game (7.2) and second in total assists (180).

AVOIDING THE PANTHER PROWL

Virginia Union is 17-10 on the season and 12-4 in the CIAA.  The Panthers are 6-3 in the Northern Division and sit in a tie for second with Bowie State.

Terell Leach leads the Panthers averaging 20.8 points a game.  William Jenkins and Demarius Pitts average 15.1 and 13.0 points a game.  Jenkins adds 8.5 rebounds per outing.

LAST MEETING

In the last meeting, Chowan fought tough on the road against #16 Virginia Union in a 55-51 loss.  The Hawks had a chance to tie the contest.  Olivia Gaither tallied 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Chowan lost 70-55 in the first meeting of the season with the Panthers.  Demetrius Sanders led the Hawks with 17 points.  Gus Rowland was held scoreless but added nine assists and eight rebounds.
