Big Inning Dooms Hawks Against Mercy

FLORENCE, S.C. – A costly error in the second inning handed the Chowan Softball team a 9-4 loss to Mercy in the opening contest of the Patriot Invitational on Friday afternoon in Florence.

Jesse Gentry went 2-3 with two doubles and two RBI.  EmaRae Flores picked up a hit and a RBI.

Beth Walker, Miranda Glover, Brittany Parson, and Haley Cooper tallied one hit each.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Chowan got on the board in the top of the first inning.  Haley Cooper and Beth Walker produced one-out singles to start the rally.  Jesse Gentry was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Cooper would score on a wild pitch for the opening run of the contest.

Mercy responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs as a walk and a single started the inning.  A double and a sacrifice fly scored the two runs.

The Mavericks added to their lead in the second inning as a two out error continued the inning.  Mercy took advantage of the miscue with a grand slam in the next at-bat to lead 6-1.

The Hawks started a rally after loading the bases in the top of the fourth inning as Lindsey Stigler drew a one-out walk.  Miranda Glover and Brittany Parson picked up singles to load the bases.  EmaRae Flores hit a sacrifice fly to right center to cut into the deficit 6-2.

Mercy tallied two more runs in the bottom half of the inning as two doubles and a single led to an 8-2 advantage.

Jesse Gentry doubled to left field to start the sixth inning but was left stranded.  In the bottom of the inning, the Mavericks tallied a run as the bases were loaded.  The Hawks got out of the jam with two ground outs, 9-2.

In the top of the seventh, EmaRae Flores picked up a single down the right field line and moved to second on a wild pitch.  Mackenzie Taggart was hit by a pitch and Beth Walker drew a walk to load the bases with two outs.  Jesse Gentry doubled to center to score two runs to close the gap to 9-4.

UP NEXT

Chowan will take on Emmanuel (Ga.) and Francis Marion tomorrow, Saturday, February 16 in the Patriot Invitational.  First pitch of the Emmanuel (Ga.) contest is at 10am.
