MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team dropped a CIAA Northern Division matchup against Virginia State on Wednesday evening at home.

Danielle Weldon and Jada Lee were recognized before the contest for reaching milestones of 500 career rebounds and achieving the all-time assists mark respectively.
Jada Lee led the Hawks with 18 points and six rebounds.  Lee achieved the 500 career rebounds in the second half.
Danielle Weldon added 16 points and seven rebounds.  Joanne Williams hauled in 11 rebounds.
Chowan shot 25.0% from the floor and 20.6% in the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter:
Jada Lee scored the opening eight points for the Hawks on two three-pointers and a put-back.  Danielle Weldon scored the next four points to give the Hawks a 12-8 advantage.
Virginia State finished off the quarter on a 6-0 run to lead 14-12.
Second Quarter:
Virginia State continued their run with another 6-0 spurt to lead 20-12 before Jada Lee knocked down a jumper.  The Trojans took a 30-16 lead with another run.  Danielle Weldon added a layup during the stretch.
Olivia Gaither knocked down a three-pointer and Joanne Williams converted from the stripe to trim the deficit to single digits, 30-21.
Danielle Weldon added a jumper and Jahkeria Bagby tallied two from the line to keep the momentum.
VSU took a 32-25 lead into the locker room.
Third Quarter:
The Hawks were held scoreless to start the half as the Trojans pushed their lead to 38-25 before Jada Lee connected from the floor.
Jada Lee added a pair from the stripe and Jordan Pettaway knocked down a triple to trim the deficit to 39-32 with 1:29 to play in the quarter.
The Trojans added a bucket to lead 41-32 heading to the final stanza.
Fourth Quarter:
The Hawks would go on a 6-2 run to trim the deficit to 43-38 midway through the quarter.  Olivia Gaither started the run with a bucket followed by Joanne Williams and Danielle Weldon's baskets.
Danielle Weldon tallied four more points to keep the Hawks within striking distance, 47-42.  Weldon connected twice from the stripe along with two by Jada Lee to cut the deficit to three, 49-46, with under a minute to play.
The Trojans would convert from the line down the stretch to keep the Hawks at-bay to preserve the 55-49 victory.
