Hope Comes In All Colors: Hawks Host Virginia State

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Men's and Women's Basketball teams welcome Virginia State to the Helms Center in the annual Play4Kay Cancer Awareness contests.

Hope comes in all colors…Wear a cancer color representing the cancer color closest to your hearts.  There will be a photo booth, face painting, games, contests, and a silent auction.  In addition, there will be a survivors and caretakers walk at halftime of the women's game.

All proceeds will go towards the Jimmy V/Play4Kay Cancer Foundation and Relay For Life.

HAWKS FILES – WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Chowan improved to 12-11 on the season and 8-5 in the CIAA.  The Hawks post a 2-4 record in the Northern Division.

Danielle Weldon leads the team averaging 13.6 points and 9.6 rebounds per outing.  Weldon sits with 920 career points.

Jada Lee and Mariah Coker chip in with 9.7 and 9.2 points respectively.  Lee is 13 steals away from becoming the career DII leader in steals.

TROJAN TRIALS

Virginia State is 9-13 overall on the season and 3-10 in the CIAA.  The Trojans are on a three-game slide after upsetting Bowie State.

Chrisanna Green is averaging a double-double this season scoring 15.4 points and hauling in 11.0 rebounds per game.  Green is posting 15.0 points and 10.9 rebounds in CIAA play.  Yazmen Hannah adds 10.7 points per game for the Trojans.

HAWKS HIGHLIGHTS– MEN'S BASKETBALL

Chowan will look to halt their four-game skid after dropping to 12-10 on the season and 5-8 in the CIAA.

Timothy Bing leads the Hawks offensively sitting in fifth in the CIAA in scoring at 17.3 points per night.  Demetrius Sanders adds 15.6 points on 51.5% shooting from the floor.  Gus Rowland averages 14.9 points, 5.0 rebounds, while leading the CIAA in assists (166) and steals (58).

Michael Kelly rounds out the scoring with 11.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per night.

Gus Rowland moved to second in the country in assists per game and second in total assists.

TRIUMPHING OVER THE TROJANS

Virginia State is 20-4 on the season and 12-1 in the CIAA.  The Trojans are 19th in the country and coming off their first loss since November as VSU was defeated by Virginia Union on the road.

Jahmere Howze leads the Trojans averaging 13.1 points per game.  Cyonte Melvin and Jalen Jackson tally 10.8 and 10.0 points respectively.

LAST MEETING

The women picked up the 59-47 victory on the road in the first meeting of the season.  Danielle Weldon and Jada Lee led the Hawks.  Jada Lee tallied a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The men fell just short in the upset bid falling 81-79.  Timothy Bing tallied 26 points, while Gus Rowland registered 18 points and 11 assists.
