Hawks Advance to Conference Carolinas Quarterfinals with Home Victory Over Young Harris

MURFREESBORO, N.C. -   The Chowan University women's basketball team opened postseason play at home Monday evening in the Second Round of the Conference Carolinas Women's Basketball Championship, hosting No. 7 seed Young Harris College. The Hawks punched their ticket to the quarterfinals at Wofford College with a 64-58 victory over the Mountain Lions.

Yasmine Brown and Daneesha Briggs led the charge with 16 points apiece to lead the Hawks to the win. Both caught fire after halftime, with Brown pouring in 14 of her 16 points in the second half and Briggs adding 13. Brown shot 2-3 from beyond the arc, pulled down four rebounds, and dished out two assists. Briggs connected on five three-pointers, added a free throw, and grabbed three rebounds.

Ayanna Rutledge contributed 11 points, going 7-8 from the free-throw line, while adding five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Aquarius Pettaway, Nyeisha Savage, and Alexandria James-Fearon each chipped in six points. Pettaway shot 2-of-3 from the field and 2-of-2 from the line while securing seven rebounds, along with an assist and a steal. Savage went 3-of-5 from the floor, tallying five rebounds, two steals, and an assist. James-Fearon grabbed eight rebounds, while also adding three assists and two blocks.

As a team, Chowan tallied 19 bench points, 18 points in the paint, 16 points off turnovers, 12 fast-break points, and 10 second-chance points.

The Hawks travel to Spartanburg, S.C., where they will face No. 3 seed Belmont Abbey College on Friday, March 6 at 8:30 p.m. at Wofford College.
