Late Run In First Half Sinks Hawks Against Barton

WILSON, N.C. – Behind another double-double by BJ McLaurin, the Chowan Men's Basketball team was unable to make up the distance from a late first half run by Barton as the Hawks fell 81-71 in Conference Carolinas action on Tuesday evening.

BJ McLaurin registered his fifth double-double of the season with 22 points and 13 rebounds.  Jaylen Dilliard scored 16 points on 7-9 shooting from the floor.

Ja'Darien Wade chipped in with 10 points, four rebounds, and five assists.  Michael Kelly added a season-high eight points.

Chowan shot 36.7% (11-30) in the second half and connected on a season-low 14.3% (3-21) from behind the arc.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Both teams started off the contest grabbing the opening points of the game from the stripe.  Brandon Mayhan would connect on 2-3 from the stripe after being fouled behind the arc.  BJ McLaurin added a bucket after a rebound to lead 4-3.

Barton countered with a small 7-2 run to lead 10-6.  Ja'Darien Wade registered his first points of the contest with a dunk.  Jaylen Dilliard ended the run with a layup.  BJ McLaurin finished off the alley-oop from Wade to cut the deficit to 12-10.

Following the McLaurin bucket, Chowan would be held scoreless for four minutes as the Bulldogs opened up their lead to double-digits with a 17-4 run.  Ja'Darien Wade registered a layup to slow the run, 27-12.

Michael Kelly converted a pair from the stripe, but the Bulldogs answered with a layup on the other end to maintain their advantage.  Kelly added a layup to end the run.  BJ McLaurin added a putback to start chipping away at the deficit.  Jamal Thomas posted a layup to aid in the run.  Jaylen Dilliard knocked down a three pointer to trim the deficit to single-digits, 31-23.

Out of the media timeout, Jamal Thomas cut the deficit even more with a layup.  Barton ended the run with a layup and 1-2 from the stripe. 

BJ McLaurin netted a three-point play to spark a rally by the Hawks to close the gap to 36-34.  Jaylen Dilliard and Ja'Darien Wade added points and McLaurin registered double-digit scoring with another layup with 5:07 remaining in the half.

BJ McLaurin and Brandon Mayhan connected from the floor to even the score at 38-all with 2:44 remaining in the half. 

Barton regained the lead following the Bulldog timeout with a 10-0 run.  Calvin Ahoume went 1-2 before the half as the Bulldogs led 48-39.

Second Half:

BJ McLaurin and Jaylen Dilliard started the scoring for the Hawks in the half with a pair of buckets on back-to-back possessions to spark a rally.  Tahkey Williams added the old-fashioned three-point play and Ja'Darien Wade added a layup to cut the deficit to 50-48 and force a timeout by Barton.

Barton countered with a 7-0 run before Jaylen Dilliard knocked down a triple to end the Bulldog run.  BJ McLaurin posted a layup before Barton pushed the deficit to double-figures, 63-53.

BJ McLaurin added three from the stripe and Michael Kelly posted a pair of layups to cut into the deficit.  Jaylen Dilliard registered a layup to trim the deficit back to single-digits.  Barton used a quick run to push their lead back to double-digits with less than five minutes remaining in the contest.

The Hawks added points from the stripe as the Bulldog lead continued to increase, 78-64, late in the contest.  Jaylen Dilliard notched a layup and Brandon Mayhan knocked down a three pointer to cut the deficit back to single-digits with less than a minute to play.

UP NEXT

Chowan has the rest of 2019 off for the holiday.  The Hawks will start the New Year on the road on January 4 against Conference Carolinas foe, Emmanuel.  Tip-off is scheduled for 4pm in Franklin Springs, Ga.
