Turnovers Stymie Chowan In Loss To Erskine

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The turnover bug bit the Chowan Men's Basketball team in a 71-62 loss to Erskine in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday afternoon.

BJ McLaurin continued to show his dominance with 21 points and nine rebounds to lead the Hawks.  Ja'Darien Wade and Brandon Mayhan added 11 points each, while Jaylen Dilliard scored 10 points.

The Hawks committed 19 turnovers leading to 11 steals for Erskine.  The Fleet used those turnovers for 24 points.

Chowan would be efficient from the floor shooting 48.9% and 45.5% from behind the arc.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Chowan jumped out to an early 5-0 lead as Brandon Mayhan connected from deep.  Tahkey Williams added a layup.  Erskine answered with a 6-0 run to lead 6-5 before a three pointer by Ja'Darien Wade handed the lead back to the Hawks, 8-6.

Erskine would answer on the other end as both teams were knotted up at 14-all.  Jaylen Dilliard added a pair from the stripe and BJ McLaurin recorded back-to-back layups.

Ja'Darien Wade gave the Hawks a slight advantage with the three-point play.  The Fleet went on a 5-0 run before a layup by Jamal Thomas, a three pointer by Brandon Mayhan, and a jumper by Jaylen Dilliard pushed the lead to 24-19.

The Flying Fleet continued to fight back to cut the deficit to one, 26-25, before Jaylen Dilliard added a layup in transition.  Erskine took the lead with an 8-0 run.  Dilliard added a pair from the stripe and BJ McLaurin connected from the floor.

Tahkey Williams registered a layup at the end of the half to trail Erskine 35-34.

Second Half:

After a pair of free throws by Erskine to start the half, Chowan went on a quick 5-0 run as BJ McLaurin drove the paint on back-to-back possessions for the bucket and the three-point play.

Ja'Darien Wade answered with a three ball to give the Hawks a 42-40 lead.  Brandon Mayhan converted from the stripe before the lead switched hands several times.  BJ McLaurin and Wade added a jumper.

Erskine tried to pull away with a quick 5-0 run but a three pointer by Brandon Mayhan and a jumper by Jaylen Dilliard handed the lead back to Chowan, 53-52, midway through the half.

The Fleet would this time go on a 9-0 run to take control of the contest.  BJ McLaurin added six points and Jamal Thomas went 1-2 from the stripe to close the gap to 65-60.  McLaurin would cut the deficit to three, 65-62, with a dunk off the assist from Ja'Darien Wade.

Erskine held the Hawks scoreless the final 4:38 to take the contest 71-62.  Chowan had four turnovers and three missed shots during that stretch.

Chowan wraps up the 2019 year with a road contest against Conference Carolinas foe, Barton, on Tuesday, December 17.  Tip-off is slated for 7:30pm in Wilson, N.C.
