Hawks Fight Trojans To Five Set Loss

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team was unable to avenge their loss against rival Mount Olive in a 3-2 defeat on the road in Conference Carolinas action on Friday evening.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Three Hawks recorded double-doubles on the evening.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez led the attack with 14 kills and 20 digs.  Hannah Sladick recorded 12 kills and 20 digs.  Ciara Ortega would add 27 assists and 13 digs.

Ann-Marie Johnson added 10 kills, while Alyssa Carroll posted eight kills and Chloe Putnam notched seven.  Katie Houston recorded a team-high 23 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set:

Hannah Sladick started off the scoring for the Hawks with a kill.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted two kills before the Trojans led 8-4 to force a timeout.

A pair of kills by Hannah Sladick kept the Hawks closer until UMO pushed their lead to 13-9.  Chowan rallied to take a 14-13 lead as Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted a kill and Alyssa Carroll notched two kills to give the Hawks the lead.

Following the Hawks' advantage, UMO countered with six straight points to regain the lead 19-14.  The Hawks struck back with six straight points as Hannah Sladick and Chloe Putnam aided in the attack.

Hannah Sladick continued to lead the attack with a pair of kills.  Alyssa Carroll and Ann-Marie Johnson added a kill to take the opening set 25-22.

Second Set:

Mount Olive opened up the set with a 9-2 run.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Hannah Sladick registered the lone points for the Hawks.

Alyssa Carroll and Hannah Sladick added a kill before the Trojans pushed their lead to 13-4.  The UMO lead swelled to 19-7.  Ann-Marie Johnson and Nyah Powers added a kill each down the stretch as Mount Olive evened the match with a 25-13 set win.

Third Set:

The Hawks would face an early 8-4 deficit with a kill by Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Ann-Marie Johnson registering a kill each.

Chowan would counter with an 8-2 run to take a 12-10 lead.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez started the run with a kill.  Ciara Ortega posted a service ace along with two aces by Rosa-Martinez and a kill from Hannah Sladick.

The lead would increase for the Hawks to 17-13 as Hannah Sladick, Ann-Marie Johnson and Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted kills.  The Trojans would try to regain the lead but were turned away with kills by Chloe Putnam, Rosa-Martinez and Alyssa Carroll.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Chloe Putnam ended the set with kills, 25-19.

Fourth Set:

Chowan would stay close in the fourth set as Alyssa Carroll cut the deficit to 6-4 with a pair of kills.  The Trojans answered with an 8-1 run to force a Chowan timeout, 14-5.

UMO doubled up the Hawks 18-9 and later pushed their lead to 22-9.  Chowan punched back with a couple points by Alyssa Carroll and Hannah Sladick as the Trojans took the set 25-14.

Fifth Set:

Mount Olive took the first three points of the set before the Hawks jumped on the scoreboard.  Chowan posted their first kill, Hannah Sladick, trailing 4-3 before UMO scored three more points.

Ann-Marie Johnson and Anixa Rosa-Martinez closed the gap to 7-6 with a kill.  Chowan stayed close as Rosa-Martinez cut the deficit again to one, 11-10.

The Trojans pulled away with three straight attack errors by the Hawks to take the final set 15-11.

Chowan returns home on Saturday to face Belmont Abbey in a Conference Carolinas contest.  First serve is at 2pm.
