Hawks Fall In Tough Match To Catawba

MURFREESBORO, N.C. –  Another strong performance went by the wayside as the Chowan Volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss in non-conference action at home Tuesday against Catawba.

Three players recorded double-doubles in the loss.  Ciara Ortega posted 31 assists and 15 digs.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez led the offense with 16 kills and 16 digs.  Hannah Sladick posted 11 kills and 14 digs.

Katie Houston nearly joined the double-double parade with 23 digs and nine assists.  Ann-Marie Johnson recorded 11 kills and 3.5 blocks.

The Hawks outhit the Indians .257 to .201.  Hannah Sladick and Nyah Powers did not produce an attack error.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set:

Catawba came out firing to open the set with an 8-2 lead, scoring the first six points.  Nyah Powers and Anixa Rosa-Martinez recorded a kill early on.

The Indians pushed their advantage to 11-4 as Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted two more kills.  Rosa-Martinez sparked the offense for the Hawks with a kill and a service ace.  Ciara Ortega and Hannah Sladick would notch a kill each to close the gap to 12-9.

Hannah Sladick recorded two kills and Nyah Powers added one as Catawba increased their lead to 18-12.  Four straight points by the Hawks would trim the deficit to 18-16.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez recorded the lone kill during the streak.

Hannah Sladick and Chloe Putnam posted a kill down the stretch and a block by Nyah Powers and Ann-Marie Johnson pulled the Hawks to within one, 24-23.

Catawba would post the final kill in the set.

Second Set:

This set, the Hawks would take an early 8-1 lead.  Nyah Powers, Ann-Marie Johnson and Anixa Rosa-Martinez registered a kill to put the Hawks out front.

Catawba would rally with five points to cut the deficit to 10-8.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez ended the rally with a kill.

Chowan went on a small run themselves to lead 16-9 and then again 19-12.  Chloe Putnam started the scoring with a kill followed by three errors by the Indians.  Ann-Marie Johnson and Alyssa Carroll produced a kill.

Two kills by Anixa Rosa-Martinez and a block by Nyah Powers and Ann-Marie Johnson pushed the lead to 22-15.

Hannah Sladick and Nyah Powers finished off the set with a kill to even the match at one a side.

Third Set:

Both teams would trade points early in the set until the Hawks scored four straight to lead 8-5.  Hannah Sladick and Nyah Powers joined in on the attack with a kill.

Catawba would even the set at 8-all before five straight points by the Hawks forced a timeout.  Chloe Putnam started the attack with a kill.  Katie Houston used an ace to keep it moving followed by a Hannah Sladick and Alyssa Carroll kill.

The Indians halted the momentum to go on a 13-2 run to lead 21-15.  Ann-Marie Johnson recorded both points for the Hawks with kills.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez registered two kills along with a kill by Chloe Putnam and a block by Alyssa Carroll was not enough for the Hawks as Catawba took the set 25-19.

Fourth Set:

Neither team separated themselves early in the final set as the Hawks lead 7-6.  Ann-Marie Johnson started with a pair of kills followed by a pair by Anixa Rosa-Martinez.  Hannah Sladick would add a pair of kills as well.

The back-and-fourth set continued as a string of assisted blocks by Nyah Powers and Ann-Marie Johnson on three straight points allowed the Hawks to lead 11-10.

Catawba would answer to lead 17-14 and force a Chowan timeout.  The Hawks continued to stay close in the set trailing by two points most of the way.  Ann-Marie Johnson and Hannah Sladick added kills down the stretch.

The Indians would take the set 25-22 on a service error.

UP NEXT

Chowan will take on Mount Olive in Conference Carolinas action on Friday, November 8 on the road.  First serve is slated for 7pm.
