Hawks Avenge Loss To Rival Virginia State

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team flipped the script to avenge the early season loss to Virginia State as the Hawks handed the rival Trojans a 3-1 loss.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Chowan out hit the Trojans .132 to .013 in the match.  The Hawks would hit .214 and .257 in the first and third sets.  Virginia State picked up the set win in the second as the Hawks hit -.057.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez led the Hawks with 13 kills.  Ann-Marie Johnson chipped in with eight kills and 3.0 total blocks.  Hannah Sladick added seven kills and seven digs.

Katie Houston tallied a team-high 21 digs, while Sydney Hiner gave a spark off the bench with 10 digs and five kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set:

The opening set of the match started with a kill by Anixa Rosa-Martinez.  Both teams would trade points until the Hawks went on a 7-1 run to lead 10-6.  Alyssa Carroll started the rally with a kill.  Back-to-back kills by Anixa Rosa-Martinez continued the rally and was capped off by Hannah Sladick's kill.

Several errors by the Trojans allowed the Hawks to push the advantage to 15-11.  A kill by Ann-Marie Johnson and an assisted block by Alyssa Carroll and Johnson pushed the lead to 20-15.

The Trojans would trim the deficit to two on several occasions and one on the final occasion as Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Nyah Powers pushed the Hawks closer to a set victory.  An attack error finished off the set in favor of the Hawks, 25-23.

Second Set:

In an error prone start to the set, Virginia State opened up a 14-3 lead.  Hannah Sladick posted the lone kill for the Hawks.

The Hawks mounted a small comeback to cut the deficit in half, as Sydney Hiner registered a kill and Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted back-to-back kills.

Chloe Putnam and Sydney Hiner added a kill as VSU pushed their lead to 22-14.  Ann-Marie Johnson posted a kill and Alexa Woolson recorded a service ace before the Trojans took the set 25-16.

Third Set:

Anixa Rosa-Martinez put the Hawks on the board with a kill and an ace.  Chloe Putnam and Hannah Sladick registered a kill to keep the set close early.

After a kill by Sydney Hiner and Alyssa Carroll, the Hawks evened the set at 9-all with an ace by Ann-Marie Johnson.

The Trojans took a 10-9 lead before a 6-0 Hawk flight allowed Chowan to lead 15-10.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez added two kills and Hannah Sladick put one down.

Virginia State rallied back to even the set at 17-all.  Ann-Marie Johnson ended the run with a pair of kills to give the Hawks the 20-17 lead.

VSU would not go away closing the gap to 22-21 and 23-22.  Back-to-back errors by the Trojans handed Chowan the 25-22 victory.

Fourth Set:

After picking up the first two points of the set via a kill by Sydney Hiner and Hannah Sladick, VSU countered with five straight points on miscues by the Hawks.

Chowan regained focus with six straight points to capture the lead, 8-5.  Ann-Marie Johnson posted a kill and a block as the Trojans faltered early.  VSU rallied to even the match before nine straight points allowed Chowan to take control of the match, 17-8.

Ann-Marie Johnson started the fight with a kill followed by a kill by Alyssa Carroll.  Carroll added two blocks as the rally was aided by Trojan miscues.

Sydney Hiner notched a service ace, Ann-Marie Johnson posted a block and a kill by Chloe Putnam and Anixa Rosa-Martinez pulled the Hawks to within one of the match victory, 24-15.

Sydney Hiner finished off the match with a kill off the blockers to defeat Virginia State.

Chowan finishes up the 2019 season on Saturday, November 16 as the Hawks take on Barton in Conference Carolinas action.  First serve is at 1pm.
