Chowan Downed By Braves In Dig Pink Match

MURFREESBORO, N.C. -  On the annual Dig Pink match, the Chowan Volleyball team was unable to rally in a straight sets loss to UNC Pembroke in non-conference action on Tuesday evening.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez notched her eighth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 11 digs to pace the Hawks.  Ann-Marie Johnson and Chloe Putnam recorded six kills each.

Katie Houston would notch 17 digs on the evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set:

UNC Pembroke led 3-1 early thanks to miscues by the Hawks.  Chowan would rally with a kill by Chloe Putnam and a block by Alyssa Carroll and Ann-Marie Johnson to even the set.

Hannah Sladick and Anixa Rosa-Martinez notched a kill each to keep pace with the Braves.  Six straight points by the Braves distanced themselves, 11-5.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez, Alyssa Carroll and Ann-Marie Johnson posted a kill to close the gap to 15-12.  Rosa-Martinez and Johnson continued to keep the Hawks in the set with a pair of kills.

Chloe Putnam recorded the last kill for the Hawks and UNCP took the opening set 25-21.

Second Set:

The back-and-forth set started with three kills by Hannah Sladick and one by Chloe Putnam.  Sladick added another kill and Alyssa Carroll joined the mix with one before five straight points by UNCP allowed them to lead 16-9.

Ann-Marie Johnson would spark a rally with a kill.  Johnson and Anixa Rosa-Martinez tallied a block leading to two kills by Rosa-Martinez and a kill by Johnson to trim the deficit to 18-17.

The Braves pushed through the rally to take the set 25-19.

Third Set:

The Hawks came out firing in the third set with an 8-2 advantage.  Sydney Hiner started the scoring with a service ace.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez continued the run with a kill and Ann-Marie Johnson added an ace.  The start would finish with Sydney Hiner and Chloe Putnam's kill.

Miscues by the Braves allowed the Hawks to double-up UNCP, 14-7.  The Braves would call a timeout and rally the troops and cut the deficit to 15-13 with five straight points.

Two kills by Chloe Putnam gave the Hawks a 21-16 lead.  Sydney Hiner notched a kill but the Braves would not go away quietly.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez brought the Hawks to within one of the set victory but UNCP answered with four straight points to take the set and match.
