Hawks Fall To Trojans In Back-And-Forth Match

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team featured another classic with their rival, Mount Olive, in a 3-1 loss in Conference Carolinas action at home on Friday evening.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Both sides recorded 90+ digs each in the four set match.  The Hawks posted 180 attack attempts, while Mount Olive posted 168.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Hannah Sladick posted double-doubles in the contests.  Rosa-Martinez posted a career-high 18 kills to go with her 19 digs.  Sladick would pick up 10 kills to go with a career-high 20 digs.

Ann-Marie Johnson notched nine kills and 2.5 blocks.  Katie Houston recorded 27 digs to lead the team.  Ciara Ortega posted 37 assists.

The Hawks would miss 17 serves.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set:

The barn burner would start early as both teams traded points.  Hannah Sladick started the match with a kill.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Ann-Marie Johnson would register a kill each to put the Hawks up 4-3.

The Hawks would double up the Trojans, 8-4, as three UMO miscues and a service ace by Sydney Hiner led to the advantage.

The Trojans would rally to even the score at 10-all.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez, Chloe Putnam, Ann-Marie Johnson, and Hannah Sladick posted a kill to trail 15-14.

Four straight points by the Trojans forced a timeout, 19-14.  A service ace by Anixa Rosa-Martinez and a kill by Chloe Putnam closed the gap slightly to 22-20.

The Trojans would take the opening set 25-21.

Second Set:

The Hawks would lead 5-3 early as two kills by Anixa Rosa-Martinez, and a kill each by Chloe Putnam and Ann-Marie Johnson gave the Hawks the early lead.

The back-and-forth continued until the Hawks would get three straight points, 14-11.  Katie Houston served up an ace and Ann-Marie Johnson recorded a solo block.

Nyah Powers and Anixa Rosa-Martinez jumped into the scoring to lead 16-13.  Rosa-Martinez and Hannah Sladick pushed the lead to 21-17.

Two errors by the Hawks allowed the Trojans to cut the deficit to 22-20.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted a kill and an ace to finish off the set, 25-22.

Third Set:

Both teams jockeyed for the lead in the third set as a block by Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Chloe Putnam gave the Hawks a 7-5 lead.  Rosa-Martinez recorded a kill and a service ace to lead 10-9 before four straight points by the Trojans flipped the lead, 13-10.

UMO added to their lead, 19-13 to force a timeout.  Hannah Sladick posted the lone kill during the offensive stall.

Hannah Saldick, Anixa Rosa-Martinez, and Ann-Marie Johnson posted a kill as the Trojans moved their advantage to 23-16.

Nyah Powers and Ann-Marie Johnson notched a kill each to cut into the deficit, but two service errors by the Hawks cut the rally short.

Fourth Set:

Mount Olive led 6-3 early in the fourth set, as Chloe Putnam and Anixa Rosa-Martinez notched a kill.  Rosa-Martinez and Ann-Marie Johnson would rally to even the score at 7-all.

Neither side could post more than two points consecutively until two attack errors by the Hawks and a Trojan kill allowed UMO to lead 23-19.

Chloe Putnam, Hannah Sladick, Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Katie Houston finished out the set with a kill before the Trojans found the final point need to take the set and match.

Chowan travels to Belmont, N.C. to take on Belmont Abbey in a Conference Carolinas match on Saturday, October 26.  First serve is at 3pm.
