CU Volleyball Falls To Saints On The Road

GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team suffered a four-set loss to Limestone on the road in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday afternoon.

Anixa Rosa-Martinez led the Hawks with 14 kills.  Hannah Sladick posted nine kills and Alyssa Carroll posted seven kills.

Sydney Hiner posted a match-high 27 digs.  Ciara Ortega notched a double-double with 30 assists and 14 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set:

Chowan would lead 7-3 in the opening set as Hannah Sladick and Anixa Rosa-Martinez started off the attack.  Alyssa Carroll added a kill along with another kills by Sladick and Rosa-Martinez.

Limestone would counter to even the set at 10-all and run their lead to 17-10.  Nyah Powers notched a kill to get the Hawks back in the scoring column.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted two kills to close the gap to 17-16.

The Hawks would continue to keep pace with the Saints evening the set at 24-all.  The Saints would find the final two points to take the set 26-24.

Second Set:

The second set would go back-and-forth as Alyssa Carroll registered a kill at 6-all.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez posted a string of kills to hand the Hawks an 18-17 advantage.

Limestone countered to even the set at 22, 23, 24, 25, and 26-all.  Alyssa Carroll would give the Hawks the set victory with a block, 28-26.

Third Set:

Limestone opened up the third set with a 9-3 run.  Alyssa Carroll notched a service ace during the offensive stall.

The Saints would push their advantage to 17-7 on miscues by the Hawks.

Chowan would cut the deficit to 24-20 with a run as Chloe Putnam and Hannah Sladick jumped into the attack.

Fourth Set:

Limestone would lead 11-6 to force a Chowan timeout in the final set.  Anixa Rosa-Martinez recorded most of the offense in the early stages.

The Saints doubled up the Hawks 16-8.  Chowan rallied back to cut the deficit to 23-19 as Chloe Putnam started the rally with a kill.  Nyah Powers, Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Alyssa Carroll added kills in the mix.

Two errors by the Hawks allowed the Saints to take the set and match.

Chowan will continue their short road trip with a non-conference match against former league rival, Elizabeth City State, on Wednesday, October 23.  First serve is at 7pm.
