Cold Shooting Plagues Hawks Against Catawba

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – Cold shooting plagued the Chowan Women's Basketball team in a low scoring non-conference affair on Thursday evening against Catawba.

Chowan shot 20.9 percent from the floor and 15.0 percent from behind the arc.

Jada Lee led the Hawks with nine points.  Danielle Weldon chipped in with eight points and eight rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Both teams struggled to find the bottom of the net in the opening quarter scoring seven points each.  Jada Lee started off the contest with a jumper just 20 seconds into the contest.  Lee would knock down a triple 2:36 later to give the Hawks a 5-0 lead.

Catawba would even the score at 5-all midway through the quarter.  The Lady Indians took the slim 7-5 lead before a pair of free throws in the final minute of the quarter knotted the contest up.

Second Quarter:

The scoring woes would continue in the second stanza with both teams scoring seven points each, again.

Danielle Weldon tallied the first bucket for the Hawks in the quarter before Mariah Coker gave the Hawks the 11-9 edge with a layup.

Teylahna Green traded a three-pointer with Catawba for the final basket for the Hawks, up 14-12 with 4:12 remaining in the half.

Catawba posted a bucket with under a minute to play to even the contest at the half at 14-all.

Third Quarter:

The scoring would heat up after the intermission as Jahkeria Bagby trades a bucket with Catawba.  Jada Lee would continue the scoring for the Hawks to keep things level, 18-all.

A pair of free throws by Olivia Gaither gave the Hawks a 20-19 advantage before one of two by Jahkeria Bagby stretched the slim lead to 21-19.  Bagby knocked down a jumper from the elbow to push the lead to 23-19 midway through the quarter.

Catawba went on a 6-2 run with a pair of triples to level the score at 25-all.  Jahkeria Bagby tallied the lone basket during the stretch.

Danielle Weldon posted a layup prior to the Lady Indians capping off the quarter on a 5-0 run to lead 30-27 heading to the final stanza.

Fourth Quarter:

Teylahna Green knocked down a triple to offset the early points by Catawba to keep the contest a one possession game.

Catawba would open the contest with a 7-0 run to lead by double-digits, 40-30.  Jada Lee ended the drought with a jumper.  Another 7-0 run by the Lady Indians put the contest out of reach, 47-33.

Danielle Weldon scored the final four points for the Hawks to end the contest.
