CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team was unable to score down the stretch as Johnson C. Smith handed the Hawks their first loss in CIAA play this season, 67-57.

Danielle Weldon led the Hawks with 11 points and eight rebounds. Olivia Gaither and Jada Lee chipped in with seven points.
Chowan shot 37.5 percent from the floor and 15.0 percent from behind the arc in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter:
Johnson C. Smith jumped out to an early 6-1 lead. Teylahna Green knocked down a triple followed by a jumper by Jada Lee evened the score.
The Golden Bulls would push the advantage to 13-6 before Jada Lee ended the drought with a jumper. Brianna Copeland would go 2-3 from the stripe before a bucket by Danielle Weldon and a three-point play by Jordan Pettaway gave the Hawks a 15-13 lead.
Olivia Gaither tallied the final bucket for the Hawks in the quarter as JCSU led 19-17 after the opening quarter.
Second Quarter:
JCSU pushed their lead to 24-17 with five quick points. Mariah Coker and Kaylah Henderson tallied a bucket each to close the gap.
Three points by Jahkeria Bagby and a pair from the stripe by Sydnee Neal evened the score at 26-all. Neal would trade a basket before Danielle Weldon traded a three-pointer to keep the score knotted.
Olivia Gaither would give the Hawks the slight advantage following a three-pointer and a free throw heading into the locker room, 36-35.
Third Quarter:
Back-to-back jumpers by Danielle Weldon and a pair from the stripe by Jahkeria Bagby allowed the Hawks to lead 42-37, midway through the quarter.
Danielle Weldon and Kaylah Henderson continued to keep the lead at five, 46-41. JCSU ended the quarter on a 7-2 run to tie the score at 48-all.
Fourth Quarter:
After four points to open the quarter, Jordan Pettaway tallied four points of her own to keep the game even. Jada Lee finished off the old-fashioned three-point play to pull within one, 56-55.
The Golden Bulls went on an 11-0 run to take control of the contest and hold off the Hawks.
