PETERSBURG, VA. – The Chowan Men's Basketball team was unable to fight off the final run by the regionally ranked Virginia State Trojans on the road in CIAA Northern Division action on Wednesday evening.

Timothy Bing scored a game-high 25 point. Gus Rowland posted 20 points and eight rebounds. Brandon Mayhan added 11 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half:
Chowan scored the first four points in the contest with layups by Timothy Bing and Michael Kelly. Virginia State went on a 10-2 run before Michael Kelly ended the run with a layup.
Five quick points by Demetrius Sanders gave the Hawks a 15-14 advantage before the Trojans went on a 16-2 run to lead 30-17. Gus Rowland and Timothy Bing posted a layup each to cut the deficit back to single digits to spark a 12-0 run by the Hawks. Bing knocked down a three-pointer and Gus Rowland went coast-to-coast after a steal. Deon Joyner knocked down a triple to cap off the run to trail 30-29.
A layup by Ugljesa Portic and Gus Rowland along with a three-pointer by Timothy Bing and Brandon Mayhan gave the Hawks a 41-37 lead with 5:09 remaining in the opening half.
Virginia State ended the half on a 9-1 run to lead 46-42 at the half.
Second Half:
VSU stretched the lead to 51-42 out of the locker room before Brandon Mayhan knocked down a triple and Gus Rowland's layup cut the deficit in half, 51-47. The Trojans pushed the lead back to double-digits before the Hawks countered with a run.
Gus Rowland started the run with a jumper in the paint followed by a three-pointer by Deon Joyner. A dunk by Demetrius Sanders capped off the run to cut the deficit to four, 61-57. Brandon Mayhan knocked down a triple before the Trojans with a quick seven point spurt.
Timothy Bing tried to keep the Hawks in the contest with back-to-back three-pointers. Gus Rowland tallied four straight points along with a Bing jumper cut the VSU lead to two, 76-74, with 4:04 remaining. Brandon Mayhan evened the score with a layup.
After a Trojan bucket, Timothy Bing gave the Hawks their first lead since the first half with a three-pointer, 79-78. VSU regained the lead at the free throw line, 80-79, with 12 seconds remaining.
On the following possession, Chowan turned the ball over. VSU hit 1-2 from the charity stripe. The Hawks were unable to get a good look at the basket at the buzzer.

Chowan returns home, where they are unbeaten, to face Bowie State in CIAA Northern Division action on Saturday, January 26. Tip-off is slated for 4pm.
