MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Men's Basketball team stymied Elizabeth City State in the second half to prevail in a CIAA Northern Division clash at home on Saturday afternoon.

Michael Kelly tallied a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds to pace the offense. Timothy Bing posted 16 points and nine rebounds. Gus Rowland chipped in with 11 points, six assists and four steals. Demetrius Sanders added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Brandon Mayhan scored six points off the bench.
Chowan's defense held ECSU to 19 second half points on 7-25 (28.0%) shooting in the half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half:
Both teams exchanged baskets early in the half as Michael Kelly put the Hawks on the board. Gus Rowland chipped in with the next four points along with a bucket by Demetrius Sanders to lead 8-6 early.
Demetrius Sanders and Gus Rowland would give the Hawks a slight 12-11 advantage. Michael Kelly and Sanders continued to lead the Hawks, 16-13.
A quick 7-0 run by the Vikings allowed ECSU to lead 20-16 at the media timeout. After a three-pointer by the Vikings, Michael Kelly knocked down a pair of jumpers and Gus Rowland converted a layup in transition to trim the deficit to one, 24-23.
Once again, the Vikings would go on a run to push the lead out to 33-25. Timothy Bing knocked down a three-pointer to close the gap slightly.
Timothy Bing dialed up another three-pointer to trim the deficit to 36-32 heading into the locker room.
Second Half:
Out of the break, Michael Kelly scored the first five points in the half after knocking down a three-pointer and a pair from the stripe to give the Hawks the 37-36 lead just 54 seconds into the half.
ECSU regained the lead with back-to-back buckets before Brandon Mayhan connected from long distance.
Gus Rowland gave the Hawks a 46-43 lead after the three-point play. ECSU fought back to take a 48-46 advantage midway through the half.
Chowan used a 7-0 lead sparked by a layup by Deon Joyner to take the lead and never relinquish it. Demetrius Sanders added a layup and Timothy Bing knocked down a triple. Another Bing three-pointer and a jumper by Brandon Mayhan gave the Hawks their largest lead of the contest, 62-53, with 2:52 remaining.
Timothy Bing offset the basket by the Vikings with a pair from the stripe to hold off the comeback attempt by the Vikings.
