HAWKS FILES – WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Chowan returns home for the first time in two weeks after a three game road trip where the Hawks went 2-1 to improve to 10-6 overall and 6-1 in the CIAA.
Danielle Weldon and Jada Lee pace the offense with 13.6 and 10.3 points per game respectively. Weldon adds 9.7 rebounds to her total. Mariah Coker (8.8), Olivia Gaither (8.0) and Jordan Pettaway (7.6) rounds out the top-five scoring for the Hawks.
Joanne Williams and Kaylah Henderson provide valuable minutes off the bench defensively.
VALIANT VIKINGS
Elizabeth City State had won four straight before falling in their past two contests to Johnson C. Smith (in overtime) and Winston Salem State. The Vikings are 11-7 overall this season and 4-4 in the CIAA.
The Vikings are led by Naterria Luster averaging 18.8 points and 9.6 rebounds per contest. Jayln Brown, Asia Deal, and Devona Stell are averaging double-digit points for the Vikings.
REGAINING THE ALTITUDE– MEN'S BASKETBALL
Chowan started the season on fire soaring out to a 10-1 record. The Hawks have dropped their last three games to fall to 10-4 and 3-3 in the CIAA. CU will look to bounce back sporting a 9-0 record at home this season.
Timothy Bing leads the offense with 17.4 points per game. Demetrius Sanders (16.9), Gus Rowland (15.0) and Michael Kelly (11.1) are averaging double-figures.
Gus Rowland is third in the country and leads the CIAA with 7.7 assists per game. Timothy Bing is averaging 21.0 points per game in CIAA play, while Demetrius Sanders is shooting a blistering 56.3 percent.
STREAKING VIKINGS
Elizabeth City State is 10-8 overall this season and 6-1 in CIAA action. The Vikings have won seven of their last eight games with their lone loss coming against Livingstone last week.
John Maynor leads the team with 11.9 points per game. Shyheid Petteway and Justin Faison post double-figure scoring outputs.
SPARKING THE RIVALRY
Chowan has won the last six meetings against the Vikings on the women's side including both meetings last season. The Hawks are 6-3 inside the Helms Center in the series, while holding the slim 10-9 advantage overall.
On the men's side, Chowan holds the overall series record, 13-9, while winning nine of the last ten meetings. The Vikings bested the Hawks last season at home, 71-68, but the Hawks picked up the non-conference win early this season, 79-62.
