CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Chowan Men's Basketball team was unable to find the bottom of the net down the stretch as Johnson C. Smith handed the Hawks only their second loss of the season, 61-54, in CIAA action on Thursday evening.

Timothy Bing and Michael Kelly led the Hawks with 12 points each. Deon Joyner chipped in with a season-high 10 points.
Demetrius Sanders registered 11 rebounds and added eight points.
Chowan struggled from the field in the second half shooting 30 percent (6-20) from the floor.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half:
Brandon Mayhan put the Hawks on the board early off the tip. Michael Kelly posted a layup and Timothy Bing knocked down a triple to even the score at 8-all.
Following a bucket by Demetrius Sanders, Deon Joyner knocked down a three-pointer to give the Hawks the slight advantage, 13-11.
The one point lead would switch hands as Michael Kelly, Gus Rowland, and Timothy Bing notched a bucket to keep the Hawks on top midway through the half.
A pair of free throws by Brandon Mayhan and a jumper by Timothy Bing forced a timeout by JCSU and gave the Hawks a 25-21 lead.
Gus Rowland converted the three-point play but a quick 5-0 run by the Golden Bulls pulled the contest even, 28-all. Michael Kelly produced back-to-back buckets and Ugljesa Portic added a bucket to give the Hawks a 34-28 lead heading into the locker room.
Second Half:
Deon Joyner and Michael Kelly offset the early points by JCSU, but a 7-1 run allowed JCSU to lead 40-39. Joyner ended the run with a triple and a dunk to hand the lead back to Chowan, 44-40.
The battle would continue as the score would even at 45, 47, and 49-all. Timothy Bing gave the Hawks a one point lead on a three-point play, 52-51.
Chowan would miss nine of their final ten shots as the Golden Bulls converted from the stripe to give JCSU room for the victory. Demetrius Sanders posted the final tally of the contest for the Hawks.
