Softball Repeats As CIAA Champions

SALEM, VA. – The Chowan Softball team claimed their fourth CIAA Softball Championship Title and back-to-back titles after an 8-0 run-rule victory over Fayetteville State on Wednesday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Haley Cooper led the Hawks at the plate going 3-4.  Lindsey Stigler picked up two hits including a two-run home run on her way to four RBI.  Stigler tied Brittany Parson for the most home runs in a single season with 11.

Donya Salman and Kris Neal picked a hit each.  Salman plated two RBI.

Shannon Buchanan was dominant in the circle picking up a one-hit shutout to move to 16-6 on the year.  Buchanan was named CIAA Tournament MVP.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Kris Neal led off the first inning with a single to left field.  Haley Cooper doubled to left center before a throwing miscue allowed Neal to trot home for the opening run of the contest.  Lindsey Stigler doubled home Cooper.  Brittany Parson reached on an error before Donya Salman's two RBI single up the middle extended the lead to 4-0.

Fayetteville State picked up their lone hit in the top of the second inning.

The Hawks would add a run in the bottom of the second to push the advantage to 5-0.  Kris Neal drew a one-out walk before Haley Cooper picked up a single.  Lindsey Stigler grounded out to shortstop for the RBI.

In the bottom of the fourth, Chowan added the three runs needed for the run-rule victory.  Miranda Glover drew a walk and swiped second to lead off the inning.  Haley Cooper brought home Glover on an infield single.  Lindsey Stigler put the Hawks over the top with a two-run blast.

The Hawks' defense was solid getting three quick outs in the fifth to preserve the win.

Chowan will await the NCAA Division II Softball Selection Show on Monday, May 7 for the Atlantic Regional Tournament.
