Softball Sweeps Bulldogs, Captures Northern Crown

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Softball completed the unbeaten season in CIAA action with a sweep over Bowie State on Senior Day on Sunday afternoon.   The Hawks secured the CIAA Northern Division Title and the overall top seed in the upcoming tournament next weekend.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES

Brittany Parson, Mackenzie Taggart and Kris Neal paced the Hawks with four hits each.  Parson and Neal tallied three RBI each.

Haley Cooper recorded four RBI on the afternoon.  Kris Neal and Beth Walker hit a home run each.

Shannon Buchanan picked up the complete game shutout in the opener as Shelby Griffis picked up the win in the second contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Chowan 7, Bowie State 0

After striking out the side to open the contest, Chowan scored in the bottom half of the inning to lead 1-0.  Brittany Parson produced a two-out single.  Beth Walker drew a walk to put Parson in scoring position before a throwing error allowed Parson to score the opening run.

Chowan added to their lead in the bottom of the second inning with three runs on four hits to lead 4-0.  Donya Salman singled to open the inning.  Miranda Glover and Mackenzie Taggart picked up base hits to load the bases.  Kris Neal and Haley Cooper would drive runs home with sacrifice flys.  Brittany Parson singled up the middle to score Taggart for the 4-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, Mackenzie singled to left center and swiped second before Kris Neal singled up the middle to score Taggart.  Brittany Parson singled to right center allowing Neal to scamper home for the 6-0 advantage.

The Hawks added their final tally in the fifth on a Haley Cooper infield single.

Game Two: Chowan 10, Bowie State 2 (5)

Bowie State put pressure on Chowan in the opening frame of game two with three hits to plate a run.  Shelby Griffis settled down and struck out the final three batters of the inning.

Kris Neal singled to right center to open the bottom of the inning and stole second and third.  Brittany Parson hit a sacrifice fly to even the score at 1-all.

Bowie State regained the lead at 2-1 in the third inning as small ball produced a run following a lead-off single.

Kris Neal would knot the score in the bottom of the third on a solo blast to open the inning.  Beth Walker would follow suit with a two-run shot scoring Brittany Parson after a walk to give the Hawks a 4-2 advantage.

The score would hold until the bottom of the fifth as Chowan plated six runs on five hits and an error to take the run-rule victory 10-2.

Brittany Parson opened the inning with a double.  Lindsey Stigler put runners on the corners with an infield single.  Donya Salman doubled home Parson before Molly Rosenthal loaded the bases with a hit by pitch.  A wild pitch would allow another run to score before a fielding error plated two more runs.

Haley Cooper capped off the victory with the run-rule walk off double.

Chowan will face the fourth seed in the Southern Division in the opening round of the CIAA Softball Championship in Salem, Va. on Monday, April 30.
