UNCP Upends Chowan In Twinbill

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Softball team dropped a pair of non-conference contests to UNC Pembroke on Wednesday afternoon.

Donya Salman led the Hawks with three hits and two walks at the plate.  Beth Walker tallied two hits and three walks.  Walker recorded a solo home run.

Kris Neal extended her program leading home run record with a solo shot in the second game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Chowan 1, UNC Pembroke 5

Donya Salman picked up the first hit of the contest with a single up the middle.  Kelsey Sonntag drew a walk before loading the bases with a Mackenzie Taggart single.  The Hawks would strand the bases loaded.

Haley Cooper opened the third inning with a single up the middle.  Beth Walker drew a walk before moving up 60 feet on a Brittany Parson sacrifice bunt.  Cooper would come across to score on a wild pitch to lead 1-0.

UNC Pembroke took the lead, 2-1, in the fourth inning as a triple in the inning plated a run.

The Braves added three runs in the sixth inning with two home runs to take the contest 5-1.

Game Two: Chowan 2, UNC Pembroke 6

Beth Walker gave the Hawks an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run.

Two errors in the top of the second inning allowed the Braves to regain the lead 2-1.  In the bottom of the inning, Donya Salman and EmaRae Flores drew walks but would be stranded in scoring position.

Kris Neal knotted the contest at 2-all with a solo home run to lead off the third inning.

UNCP scored three runs in the top of the fifth on two hits to lead 5-2.  The Braves tacked on a run in the seventh to take the victory 6-2.

UP NEXT

Chowan continues their quest for the CIAA Northern Division title with a doubleheader against Lincoln (Pa.) on Saturday, April 21.  First pitch is at 12pm.
