Williams Goes Deep Four Times In Road Split

PRINCETON, W.VA. – The Chowan Baseball team split the opening doubleheader against Bluefield State on the road on Saturday. The Hawks cruised to a 24-3 win in the opener before falling 12-11 in the nightcap on a walk-off home run.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Robert Williams hit a program record three home runs on his first three at-bats of the first contest.  Williams tallied a six RBI.  Williams finished the day going 7-9 at the plate with four home runs, a double and nine RBI.

Trent Brosdahl posted two home runs on the afternoon with a career-high eight RBI.  Harry Markotay recorded a home run in the win.

Cody Smith evened his record at 3-3 on the mound tossing five innings allowing three runs off three hits and struck out nine.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Chowan 24, Bluefield State 3

Chowan jumped out to an early 8-0 lead after the opening half inning.  Harry Markotay opened the inning reaching on an error and moved to second on a passed ball.  Julian Lopez singled to bring home Markotay for the opening run of the game.  Nick Rose doubled before Trent Brosdahl singled home Lopez and Rose.  Robert Williams hit his first home run of the contest to stretch the lead to 5-0.

Harry Markotay hit a three-run home run bringing home Trenton Lee and Anthony Jefferson to push lead to 8-0.

A solo home run for the Big Blues trimmed the deficit to 8-1.

The Hawks pushed the advantage to 11-1 as Trent Brosdahl sent a ball over the fence for a two-run shot.  Robert Williams greeted the new pitcher with his second home run of the game for the 11-1 lead.

CU tacked on six more runs in the third inning to lead 17-1.  Anthony Jefferson started the inning getting hit by a pitch and stole second.  Harry Markotay singled home Jefferson.  Marquise Lanier drew a walk and Julian Lopez singled to load the bases.  A fielder's choice by Nick Rose brought home a run.  Trent Brosdahl would double home Lopez before Robert Williams hit his third home run of the game.

Bluefield State scored twice in the third to close the gap slightly to 17-3.

Doubles by Marquise Lanier and Nick Rose sparked a four run inning in the fourth.  Trent Brosdahl hit his second home run of the game to bring the score to 21-3.

The Hawks added three runs in the seventh to increase the lead to 24-3.  Noah Cartwright and Austin Stevens picked up base hits before Tyler Sherrod's walk loaded the bases.  Tyler Jones and Trenton Lee tallied base hits to clear the bags.

Game Two: Chowan 11, Bluefield State 12

Bluefield State struck quickly in the first inning on the help of two errors by the Hawks to take a 4-0 lead.

Chowan would answer in the top of the second inning as a wild pitch allowed a run to score.  Corey Bolam hit a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 4-2.

The Hawks evened the score in the top of the third as Anthony Jefferson singled to center.  Jefferson moved to second on a wild pitch.  Harry Markotay would put runners on the corners with a single before Marquise Lanier hit a sacrifice fly.  Nick Rose would drive in Markotay with a single to even the score, 4-4.

Harley Davidson gave the Hawks a 5-4 lead in the fourth with a double that scored Robert Williams after reaching on a single to right.

The Big Blues would regain the lead in the bottom of the inning as three free passes and a base hit plated two runs to lead 6-5.  Bluefield State added three runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 9-5 as a three-run home run produced the damage.

Chowan fought back in the seventh inning to plate six runs to take the lead once again 11-9.  Anthony Jefferson singled up the middle before moving to third after Harry Markotay reached on an error.  Julian Lopez singled home Jefferson and Markotay.  Lopez swiped second to put himself in scoring position and came around to score on Nick Rose's single.

Following a pitching change, Trent Brosdahl doubled to left before Robert Williams cleared the bases with a three-run home run to give the Hawks the 11-9 advantage.

Bluefield State rallied in the bottom of the seventh as the Big Blues walked-off the Hawks with a three-run homer to take the contest 12-11.

UP NEXT

Chowan's doubleheader against Bluefield State on Sunday, April 15 has been cancelled because of inclement weather.  The Hawks will return to the field on Tuesday, April 17 against Mount Olive.
