Chowan Finishes Strong To Double Up Montevallo

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Men's Lacrosse team used a strong final period to double up the Falcons of Montevallo, 16-8, on Tuesday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Anthony Alfonso tallied nine points on the afternoon to pace the Hawks with six goals and three assists.  Alex Clabaugh posted seven points with five goals and two assists.

Nick LaVoy, third in the nation in goals scored, scored twice and assisted on three other goals.

Deven Roberts picked up a team-leading seven ground balls.  Quenten Schoener caused four turnovers.

Austin Lee picked up the win in goal allowing seven goals and stopped eight shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Alex Clabaugh started the scoring for the Hawks before Montevallo evened the score just five minutes into the contest.

Noah Holloway tallied an unassisted goal with 5:56 to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead and never gave the advantage back.  Anthony Alfonso scored off a pass from Alex Clabaugh before Noah Holloway scored to push the lead to 4-1.

Montevallo tallied a goal to end the period.

Second Quarter:

The Hawks opened the contest in the period with six goals as Nick Lavoy scored off an assist from Anthony Alfonso.  Nick Lavoy would find RJ Foster for a goal 90 seconds later.

Less than 30 seconds later, Noah Holloway found Anthony Alfonso for a man-up goal to push the advantage to 7-2.  Alex Clabaugh added to the advantage with an unassisted goal.

Following two goals by the Falcons, Anthony Alfonso recorded two assists on goals by Alex Clabaugh and Nick LaVoy to end the half leading 10-4.

Third Quarter:

The Falcons held the Hawks scoreless in the period while cutting into the deficit 10-7.

Fourth Quarter:

The Hawks ramped up the attack in the period to put distance between them and the Falcons.  Josh Nicholson found Alex Clabaugh for a goal to start the scoring.

13 seconds later Deven Roberts raced down the middle of the field and found Anthony Alfonso for his first of four goals in the period.  Alfonso scored back-to-back goals following the Roberts assisted goal off passes from Nick Lavoy and Josh Nicholson to extend the advantage to 14-7.

Alex Clabaugh would find the back of the net and tally an assist in the final two goals of the contest.  Anthony Alfonso scored off the Clabaugh assist for the final tally.

Montevallo scored in the final minute of the contest.

UP NEXT

Chowan hits the road for the first of four straight road contests as the Hawks travel to Lees-McRae for Conference Carolinas action on Saturday, March 31.  The contest has been moved to Watauga High School in Boone, N.C.
