Long Ball Lifts CU Softball To CIAA Sweep

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Chowan Softball team continued to power their way through the CIAA Round-Up with eight home runs on the final day to move to 6-0 in league play.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Beth Walker led the team at the plate going 3-3 with two home runs, double, and seven RBI.  Walker picked up five free passes.

Brittany Parson led the long ball charge with three home runs and nine RBI going 4-8 at the dish. Parson hit the game-winner against Winston-Salem.

Lindsey Stigler hit two home runs and drove in three.  Haley Cooper went 4-9 from the plate and a home run.

Shannon Buchanan (8-4) and Shelby Griffis (7-4) picked up wins on the afternoon.  Buchanan tallied 12 strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Chowan 10, Winston-Salem State 8

WSSU jumped on the board in the top of the second inning posting four runs off four hits and an error to lead 4-0.

Molly Rosenthal picked up the first hit for the Hawks in the bottom of the inning with a double to left center.

Chowan would chip away at the deficit in the third inning scratching across a run off two hits.  Kris Neal reached on an infield single and moved into scoring position on Haley Cooper's single to left.  Beth Walker drew a walk to load the bases before a RBI groundout scored the run for the Hawks.

The bats would get going for the Hawks in the bottom of the fourth inning as CU took the lead 6-4.  Mackenzie Taggart doubled to left center to score Miranda Glover, who walked to start the rally.  Kris Neal would produce a hit to score Taggart before Haley Cooper hit a home run to left center.  Lindsey Stigler sent a rocket over the fence down the left field line in back-to-back at-bats.

WSSU knotted the contest up in the sixth inning at 6-all.  The Rams would take the lead in the seventh inning on a two-run shot, 8-6.

With one out, Lindsey Stigler tied the contest with her second home run of the game scoring Kris Neal, who drew a walk.  Beth Walker drew a free pass after getting hit by a pitch.  Brittany Parson took a 1-0 pitch and sent it over the left center field wall for the walk-off win, 10-8.

Chowan 15, Fayetteville State 1

The Hawks exploded for three runs in the top of the first inning as Haley Cooper started the rally with a one out single to left.  Lindsey Stigler drew a walk before Beth Walker hit a three run shot to center for the early lead.

The Broncos tallied their only run of the contest on a solo shot in the bottom of the first inning.

Chowan took advantage of three miscues in the third inning to extend the lead to 7-1.  Kris Neal singled to left and moved to second on a misplay in the outfield.  Haley Cooper reached on an error and Lindsey Stigler drew a walk to load the bases.  Beth Walker hit a sacrifice fly before Brittany Parson unloaded the bases with a three run home run.

CU tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning on another Brittany Parson three run home run to lead 10-1.

The scoring would continue in the fifth inning posting five runs off four hits.  Kelsey Sonntag singled and swiped second and Carliegh Wildeboer singled to left to put runners on the corners.  Haley Cooper doubled to left before Lindsey Stigler reached on a fielding miscue by the Broncos.  Beth Walker put the finishing touches on the scoring with a three run home run.

UP NEXT

Chowan has the week off before hitting the road to face nationally-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne on Sunday, March 25 for a doubleheader.  First pitch is at 1pm.
