De Witt Notches Win 100, Hawks Softball Wins Three

SALEM, VA. – The Chowan Softball team picked up three wins on day two of the Salem Tournament to give head coach Brian De Witt his 100th career win at Chowan.

De Witt notched the milestone win in a 9-1 victory over Edinboro.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES

Shelby Griffis tossed 12.0 innings on the afternoon to pick up two wins.  Griffis allowed five runs (four earned) and struck out eight batters.

EmaRae Flores picked up the win against West Liberty tossing 7.0 innings allowing five runs (two earned).

Beth Walker, Brittany Parson, Molly Rosenthal, Haley Cooper and Kelsey Sonntag produced the power for the Hawks with a home run on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Chowan 8, Bloomsburg 4

Chowan jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning to lead 3-0.  Kris Neal led off the contest with a single up the middle and moved to third on a stolen base and wild pitch.  Haley Cooper walked as Neal came home on a passed ball.  Beth Walker gave the Hawks a 3-0 lead with a two run home run.

Bloomsburg looked to cut into the deficit in the second inning putting runners on second and third with hits.  Shelby Griffis worked out of the jam to strand the runners.

The Huskies cut into the deficit in the third inning as three hits and an error allowed two runs to score.

The Hawks answered with five runs in the bottom of the third inning to lead 8-2.  Back-to-back doubles by Lindsey Stigler and Beth Walker sparked the rally.  Kelsey Sonntag reached on an error and Donya Salman drew a walk to load the bases.  Miranda Glover doubled home a pair to push lead to 6-2.

Mackenzie Taggart reached on an error before Kris Neal singled up the middle to extend lead to 8-2.

Bloomsburg added a run in the fifth and seventh inning to close the gap to 8-4.

Chowan 9, Edinboro 1

Kris Neal led off the game with a hit-by-pitch and swiped second.  Lindsey Stigler pushed Neal to third on a sacrifice before Brittany Parson singled to left center for the first tally of the contest.

Molly Rosenthal extended the lead with a one-out home run in the bottom of the second inning.  Miranda Glover reached on an error before coming around to score on a Kris Neal double.  Haley Cooper hit a home run to center field to push the advantage to 5-0.

The Chowan lead would swell to 7-0 in the bottom of the third inning as Brittany Parson led the inning off with an infield single.  Kelsey Sonntag drew a walk before the duo performed a double-steal.  A ground out and a Molly Rosenthal double brought home the duo.

Edinboro broke up the shutout in the top of the fifth inning posting three hits in the inning to score a run to close the gap to 7-1.

Molly Rosenthal singled to open the fifth inning before Miranda Glover doubled home pinch runner Carliegh Wildeboer.  Haley Cooper hit a sacrifice fly to finish off the walk-off run rule contest to win 9-1.

Chowan 8, West Liberty 5

Brittany Parson put the Hawks on the board in the top of the second inning with a solo home run.

Chowan added to their lead in the third inning as Kris Neal started the inning with a double.  Lindsey Stigler hit a sacrifice fly following a ground out to score Neal from third.  Brittany Parson singled and would come around to score on Kelsey Sonntag's home run.

The Hawks would add three runs in the fifth inning to lead 7-0 over West Liberty.  Haley Cooper started the inning with a single.  Brittany Parson drew a walk before a RBI double by Kesley Sonntag brought home a run.  Donya Salman produced a base knock to bring home two more.

The lead would grow to 8-0 in the sixth inning before the Hilltoppers scored twice in the bottom of the inning.

West Liberty looked to make a comeback in the bottom of the seventh but a double play ended the threat with the Hilltoppers closing the gap to 8-5.

UP NEXT

Chowan wraps up the Salem Tournament on Sunday, March 11 against East Stroudsburg.  First pitch is slated for 10am.
