Chowan MLAX Wins Battle of Hawks In Opener

ROME, GA. – The Chowan Men's Lacrosse team opened their season with a 13-10 win over Shorter in the Battle of the Hawks in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Three Hawks netted a hat-trick in the contest with Nick Lavoy leading the way with five goals.  Austin Lee and Noah Holloway scored three goals each.

Noah Holloway and Anthony Alfonso tallied two assists apiece.  Alfonso posted two goals in the win.

Zach Mueller picked up his first win of the season in cage with 17 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Shorter held Chowan scoreless in the opening quarter leading to a 2-0 lead for Shorter. Alex Clabaugh recorded the only shot for Chowan.

Second Quarter:

After allowing a 3-0 deficit, Chowan rallied back with five straight goals.  Nick Lavoy put the Hawks on the board with an unassisted goal.  Noah Holloway closed the gap with a goal before Anthony Alfonso scored 11 seconds later to knot the contest at 3-all.

Back-to-back goals by Nick Lavoy handed the Hawks the lead, 5-3, off assists from Skylar Briscoe and Alex Clabaugh.

Austin Lee scored an unassisted goal in the final minute of the half to put Chowan ahead 6-5 going into the half.

Third Quarter:

Shorter came out of the break with three straight goals to regain the lead, 8-6.  Chowan scored six of the next seven goals to grab the lead for good.

Austin Lee started the attack with a man-up goal off the assist from Noah Holloway.  Holloway found the back of the net himself to tie the contest at eight a side.

Another man-up goal off a pass from Noah Holloway allowed Nick Lavoy to find the back of the net.  Shorter managed to get a shot past the Chowan goalie to tie things once again.

Anthony Alfonso scored 22 seconds later for the go-ahead goal.  Alfonso would assist on the next two goals as Noah Holloway and Nick Lavoy scored.

Fourth Quarter:

Austin Lee scored the lone goal for Chowan in the quarter to give the Hawks a 13-9 advantage.  Chowan's defense held Shorter to one goal in the period to keep the comeback stalled.

Chowan continues their road trip with a trek to Daytona Beach, Fla. to face start-up program Embry-Riddle on Saturday, February 10.
