Chowan MBB Drops Season Finale At VUU

RICHMOND, VA. – The Chowan Men's Basketball Team struggled to find their rhythm in a 90-51 loss in the regular season finale on the road to Virginia Union on Saturday.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

The Richmond, Va. native, Gus Rowland, produced a game-high 17 points to lead the team.  Robert Grubbs added 14 points connecting from deep four times.

Chowan shot 20% from the floor in the first half hitting five field goals, all from behind the arc.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Gus Rowland knocked down a three to start the scoring in the contest.  Demetrius Sanders went 1-2 from the free throw line and a triple by Tim Hewett gave the Hawks a 7-6 lead, five minutes into the contest.

Chowan would hold onto to a slim lead as Robert Grubbs connected from deep to lead 10-8.  Grubbs dialed up another shot from distance to keep the Hawks ahead.

Virginia Union went on a 16-0 run to lead by double-figures, 26-14, before Gus Rowland ended the run with a triple.

The Panthers ended the half on a 21-4 run to lead 47-21 at intermission.

Second Half:

Jarvez Ellis and Dorian Rivera got into the scoring column with a layup and a three-pointer to start the half.

VUU answered with an 11-2 run to push the advantage to 62-28.  Gus Rowland ended thee spurt with a layup.  Robert Grubbs completed the four-point play to cut into the deficit.

Robert Grubbs added another four-point play midway through the half to cut the deficit to 67-38.

VUU outscored the Hawks by double-figures to end the contest.

UP NEXT

Chowan ended the regular season with an 11-14 overall record and 5-11 mark in the CIAA. Updated brackets for the CIAA tournament will be announced at a later time.
