Chowan Baseball Splits Finale Against Molloy

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Baseball team picked up a Sunday split against the visiting Molloy Lions, 13-6 and 5-4, on Sunday afternoon.

Julian Lopez led the charge for the Hawks picking up three hits and six RBI.  Lopez launched his first home run of the season with a grand slam in game one.

Nick Rose went 2-2 on the afternoon with three runs scored and three walks.

Harry Markotay went 2-3 in game one of the day with two RBI.  Robert Williams picked up three RBI.

Trenton Lee picked up the win in game one tossing 1.1 innings striking out one and getting three groundouts.

Cody Smith took the no-decision in game one with 4.2 innings allowing three runs off five hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Chowan 13, Molloy 6

Harry Markotay drew a seven pitch walk to start the inning for the Hawks.  Following a fielder's choice, Nick Rose drew a walk.  A throwing error allowed Marquise Lanier to move to third.  Rose would swipe second.  Robert Williams gave the Hawks a 2-0 cushion early with a double to center.

Cody Smith pitched well for the first three innings until the Lions put up a fight in the fourth.  The Lions picked up their first extra base hit of the series and loaded the bases with back-to-back walks.  Smith would get out of the jam with a popup and groundout.

The Lions would breakthrough in the top of the fifth on Cody Smith as back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases.  Another walk brought in the first run for Molloy.  The Lions would score on a balk and a fielder's choice to take a 3-2 lead.

Chowan responded with a strong seven run inning in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Harry Markotay started the inning with a bloop single before Marquise Lanier tripled to left field to knot the contest at 3-all.  Nick Rose would draw another walk and swipe second.  Robert Williams hit a sacrifice fly to give the Hawks the lead.  Julian Lopez and Tyler Jones tallied RBI hits to keep the inning going.

Harley Davidson was hit by a pitch before an Anthony Jefferson single down the third base line chased the Lions' pitcher.  Harry Markotay singled to right center to bring home Jefferson and Davidson to push the advantage to 9-3.

The Hawks tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the sixth as Julian Lopez hit a grand slam in the inning.  Nick Rose singled to start off the inning.  Trent Brosdahl singled and Robert Williams walked to load the bases for the long ball.

The Lions cut into the deficit with three runs in the seventh to close the gap 13-6.

Game Two: Chowan 4, Molloy 5

The early innings featured quick innings on both sides until the Hawks broke the scoreless contest in the bottom of the fourth with two runs.

Marquise Lanier started the rally with a double down the left field line.  Julian Lopez singled through the left side of the infield and advanced to second on the throw home as Lanier scored.  Trent Brosdahl singled to right field before a fielder's choice brought home the second run of the contest.

The Lions were able to get to Bailey Lipscomb in the top of the sixth inning as two singles and a hit by pitch allowed Molloy to score their first run of the contest.  An error and two base hits allowed the Lions to take the lead 5-2.

Chowan responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to close the deficit, 5-4.  Tyler Jones, Nick Rose, and Harley Davidson loaded the bases with two-out walks.  Anthony Jefferson singled to right center to score Jones and Rose.

The Hawks were unable to scratch across the tying run in the seventh to fall 5-4 in the finale.

Chowan hosts Goldey-Beacom in a four-game series on Saturday and Sunday, February 24-25.  First pitch of the doubleheader starts at 12pm.
