Hawks WBB Falls To Bowie State At Home

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team was tripped up at home in CIAA Northern Division action against Bowie State on Saturday afternoon.

Chantel Roberts notched a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.  Roberts connected 3-5 from behind the arc.

Dhyamond Crenshaw led the Hawks with a game-high 17 points.  Jada Lee and Mariah Coker chipped in with 13 and 10 points respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

The opening quarter was a back-and-forth battle as the score was tied five times in the opening segment.  Dhyamond Crenshaw tied the score at 2-all before Mariah Coker tied the contest at four.

A layup by Jada Lee and Dhyamond Crenshaw gave the Hawks an 8-6 lead early.  A quick 5-0 run by Bowie State handed the lead back before Jordan Pettway tied the contest at 11-all.

Chantel Roberts pushed the lead back to the Hawks connecting from deep with 2:21 left in the quarter.

Dhyamond Crenshaw finished the quarter with three points to trail Bowie State 18-17 at the end of 10 minutes.

Second Quarter:

Five points by Chantel Roberts allowed the Hawks to take their largest lead of the contest, 22-18, just 12 seconds into the quarter.

Bowie State would take a hold of the contest in the quarter going on a 14-1 over the next five minutes to lead 32-23.  Jordan Pettaway ended the Bulldog run with a triple.

Jada Lee hit a jumper before Chantel Roberts connected once again from deep to trail 34-31 at the intermission.

Third Quarter:

The Hawks would open on a quick four point run to regain the lead 35-34.  The Bulldogs responded with an 8-0 run to take the lead and never give it back to the Hawks.

Chowan and Bowie State traded baskets as Dhyamond Crenshaw and Jada Lee chipped in with five points each down the stretch of the quarter as Bowie State led 53-48 heading to the final quarter.

Fourth Quarter:

Bowie State pushed their advantage to double-figures early in the fourth quarter.  Chantel Roberts tallied an old-fashioned three-point play to trim the deficit to nine, 60-51, with 7:25 remaining.

Chowan would fail to connect from the floor until Mariah Coker hit a triple with 1:44 left.  The Hawks would receive four points from the line during the stretch.

The Hawks would not be able to cut into the deficit as the Bulldogs kept the advantage in their favor.

UP NEXT

Chowan wraps up their home slate with a CIAA Northern Division clash against Lincoln (Pa.) on Wednesday, February 21.  The Hawks will honor Dhyamond Crenshaw and Chantel Roberts in part of senior night.  The contest is also CU's 10th Annual Play4Kay event.  Tip-off is at 5:30pm.
