Hawks WBB Upset By Lincoln On Senior Night

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team was upset by Lincoln in the final home contest of the season in the CIAA Northern Division, 71-68.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Mariah Coker led the team with 18 points.  Senior Chantel Roberts posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Dhyamond Crenshaw finished with 11 points, while Jordan Pettaway chipped in with 10 points.  Joanne Williams hauled in 10 rebounds.

The Hawks struggled from the free throw line going 10-22 (45.5%).

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

The Hawks jumped out to a 6-2 lead as Dhyamond Crenshaw put the Hawks on the board early.  Mariah Coker knocked down a pair from the stripe and Jada Lee hit a jumper.  The Lions knotted the contest up at six, eight and 10.

Chowan would wrap up the quarter on a 7-2 run to lead 17-12.  Chantel Roberts started the rally with a layup followed by a jumper by Danielle Weldon.  Mariah Coker knocked down a three to close the scoring.

Second Quarter:

Chowan extended its lead to 22-12 as Danielle Weldon and Jordan Pettaway scored five quick points.

The Hawks would go quiet for over five minutes as the Lions mounted a 14-0 run to take the lead 26-22.  Chantel Roberts snapped the cold spell with a jumper with 3:44 remaining.

Joanne Williams connected from the floor for her only points of the contest to tie things at 28-all.

The Lions would take a 32-30 advantage into the locker room.

Third Quarter:

Chowan regained the lead following five quick points by Mariah Coker and Dhyamond Crenshaw but the Lions would take the lead back with a run of their own.

Midway through the quarter, Chowan used a 6-0 run to regain the lead, 43-41, on a Mariah Coker triple.

Jordan Pettaway knocked down a triple to give the Hawks a five point advantage, 52-47, before leading by three heading to the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter:

The back-and-forth battled continued as the Hawks would extend the lead to seven, 63-56, as Chantel Roberts scored five straight points before Mariah Coker knocked down a jumper.

Lincoln ended the game on a 15-5 run as the Hawks went 1-11 from the floor and 3-6 from the line to seal the upset.

Chowan wraps up the regular season against nationally ranked Virginia Union on Saturday, February 24 in Richmond, Va.  Tip-off is slated for 2pm.
