Chowan MLAX Clipped Against Coker, 12-11

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Men's Lacrosse team came up short against Coker in a back-and-forth battle in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon, 12-11.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Anthony Alfonso and Nick Lavoy tallied hat-tricks in the loss as Alfonso scored four time along with three from LaVoy.  LaVoy added two assists.

Austin Lee, Alex Clabuagh, Xavier Wingfield, and Noah Holloway found the back of the net for the Hawks.

Skylar Briscoe was 15-25 from the face off spot along with 13 groundballs.  DJ Walker took the loss in cage allowing 12 goals and had 14 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Coker grabbed the momentum early scoring four goals in the opening period.  Alex Clabuagh found Nick Lavoy for the only tally of the period for the Hawks.

Second Quarter:

Chowan dominated the second period outscoring Coker 5-2.  Noah Holloway found Austin Lee for the first tally of the period to close the gap to 4-2.

Noah Holloway found the back of the net following a Coker goal to keep the deficit at two, 5-3.  The Cobras answered the goal to push the lead back to 6-3 with 3:47 remaining in the half.

Nick Lavoy and Anthony Alfonso brought the Hawks back in the half scoring three goals to tie things at 7-all.  LaVoy found Alfonso with 2:20 remaining to start the attack.  Alfonso would find the net again with just over a minute to play to trim the deficit to one, 6-5.

As time was winding down, Nick Lavoy ripped a shot from the restraining line and found the back of the net as time expired to send the Hawks to a 6-all half time score.

Third Quarter:

The Cobras kept the lead following a goal early in the period.  Nick Lavoy and Anthony Alfonso teamed up once again to tie things at 7-all.

The Hawks would take their first lead of the contest midway through the period as Austin Lee found Alex Clabaugh for a man-up goal to lead 8-7.

Coker scored two times in the remainder of the period to lead 9-8 heading to the final period.

Fourth Quarter:

Xavier Wingfield beat his defender in a 1-v-1 situation to trim the deficit to 10-9 with 9:05 left in regulation.

Coker extended their advantage to three, 12-9, with 4:04 remaining.  Anthony Alfonso scored an unassisted goal with 1:14 left before Alfonso found Nick Lavoy for a man-up goal with 43 seconds remaining to close the gap to one, 12-11.

The Cobras won the final face-off and kept the ball away from the Hawks to run out the clock.

UP NEXT

Chowan returns to the field on Friday, February 23, as the Hawks travel to Salisbury, N.C. to face Catawba in a non-conference clash.  Opening face-off is at 3:30pm.
